Advantages: Cheap

Disadvantages: Tastes cheap, tastes too sweetened and it's false economy

At 22p a bottle of lemon squash (and my favourite flavour) when I saw this I grabbed a bottle to try in my local Asda store a couple of weeks back. It seemed great value to me and being a rather active person it seemed a nice change to me from guzzling so much water......which quite frankly at the moment I'm sick the death of lol.

The Packaging:

750ml square shaped, ridged bottle with a white screw on/off plastic lid/cap to the top of it and around the middle of it there is a white and green label and on the front of that I'm told it is Asda 'Smart Price' No Added Sugar Lemon Double-Strength Squash, that is new and is free from artificial colours or flavours (and that it only contains naturally occurring sugars) and that it is 750ml in size. Other information on the label gives me a list of ingredients and allergy advice, a full nutritional explanation is given as are storage details explained and then I'm given instructions for use, contact details for Asda are listed and finally there is a bar-code on there. Very simple but a very informative looking bottle this is.

Instructions For Use:

Dilute one part lemon squash with nine parts water. If serving to toddlers, add extra water. Contains approximately 30 servings.

The Drink....

The first time I tried this I made it up as directed trusting this is a double concentrated strength squash and I spat it out. It looked like a murky glass of water with a hint of lemons to it giving a slight yellowy cloudiness and it was slightly sweet and not to my taste at all and I thought quite frankly it as vile.

However I tried again and I personally need this made up more like 4 parts of water to the same amount of juice as to my taste-buds it's far too weak and tasteless otherwise! Made up the way I prefer it, well it's acceptable but to be totally honest it really does lack that quality feel.

It smells like sweet, fake lemons. It does taste a bit like lemons, has a slight sourness to it (although I wouldn't describe it zesty at all) and the more you drink of the stuff the more your palette will pick up on all the sweeteners in this. I'm a little confused and maybe someone will know the answer to this? How come Asda say there are no sweeteners in this and only natural sugars yet on the ingredient lists, and I quote ' Sweeteners Acesulfame K, Sucrolose' are included. No matter the reason and even if those things are sourced somewhat from real sugars somewhere along the line the content of sugar in this drink tastes faked and the more you drink of it the more you can taste them too!

Verdict:

It isn't awful stuff but I feel that the amount of squash you need to make the drink taste acceptable makes this false economy! Not for me this one, and only purchase it if you like light flavoured squashes with a fake sweetness to them. I'm sure there's someone out there lol.....

Allergy Advice:

Contains sulphur dioxide.

Acesulfame potassium is a calorie-free artificial sweetener, From wikipedia - also says the jury is out as to whether it is carcinogenic
So they are not being very honest it is an artificial sweetener
