Advantages: the cute little fawn, its cheap!
Disadvantages: lacks a 'kick'
Whilst browsing my local Somerfield's the other day I came across 'Babycham' and was rather attracted to the 'fawn' on the front. Babycham cleverly uses the cute fawn to attract women...well it is classed as a 'woman's drink'. The four 200ml bottles were excellently priced at £1.49 so I decided to add them to my basket.
In recent years I have taken a fancy to wine and it is now my drink of choice when I go out. I purchased Babycham thinking it was a cheap version of wine and I wasn't far wrong although in comparison it is more of a cider. The product was marketed as a pear champagne and was very popular amongst women, becoming one of the most popular drinks for women in the 60's.
HISTORY
--------------
The Showering Brothers ran a small brewery in Shepton Mallet, Somerset and were looking for ways to improve their cider. They used Perry pears to create Babycham and decided that this was a great alternative to their cider. In the 40's Babycham was created.
THE PACKAGING
--------------------------
Babycham is available in the multi-packs of four small (200ml) dark green bottles with a metal lid. These were a little annoying as I spent most of the time searching for a bottle opener...only to find that the lid was impossible to get off. As Babycham is so cheap anyway I find that a few packs of these bottles can go down great at a party and fit nicely in a fridge/wine bucket.
Babycham is also available in 750ml bottles with a screw top lid which is obviously better at a dinner party as it can be shared out and then resealed. Babycham is also available in 'popping cork' variety for special occasions and I find this is almost as good as champagne...obviously not in taste but in cork-popping style - or as far as the neighbours are concerned anyway.
THE PRODUCT
----------------------
On opening the lid the bubbles leap to the top and the drink inside can be rather feisty. I don't get a particular smell although it has a similar aroma of a cheap fruity wine but is very similar to lemonade. The colour is slightly paler to that of a white wine.
The taste is also very similar to the smell, nothing really stood out as being particularly special. In fact it tasted much like a watered down wine mixed with very fizzy lemonade. Unlike wine however the taste is very sweet, despite this it is not sickly kind of 'sweet. To an avid wine taster the taste is likely to disappoint, as it is to a professional alcohol taster in general.
The drink unfortunately is nothing special but it is easy to drink and is a cheap substitute to champagne with some of the cheaper ones being priced at £20.
Babycham is a very 'drinkable' drink and by this I simply mean that it is so easy to drink and at only 6% alcohol by volume (ABV) it's not going to get you legless quickly, in fact the only thing that made me stop drinking it was the fizz and the uncontrollable urge to burp after every mouthful.
Whilst the taste was quite disappointing there is also the famous Bucks Fizz...and if you can make your mind up which one to choose (boom boom) then this one offers a better flavour as it is blended with orange juice.
AVAILBILITY
---------------------
This drink is available from most supermarkets at a really cheap price of about £3 for the multi-pack 4x200ml bottles or about £2.75 for the 750ml bottles. I would say that this is a great value if you are not fussy about the stuff you drink. This time of the year however (Christmas) Babycham is on offer at excellent prices.
SUMMARY
-----------------
Overall this is a great drink to serve at a celebration especially if you have a cork popping bottle. On the other hand if you are having a girly night in then this drink is perfect. I did offer some to my other half who wasn't keen on it...the drink seems to be marketed as a girly drink for a reason and its not my partners first...second or even 30th drink of choice. In his words "it's bearable but not great".
