Advantages: on special offer, nice and refreshing
Disadvantages: too sweet
Admittedly, writing about alcohol is something of a rarity for me. After all, I can’t use it as make-up or read it, so why would I be interested? (LOL) I prefer a cup of tea to booze, to be honest. But sometimes these things just have to be done – a difficult week… moving house… while watching Big Brother… while (until today, grrr) cheering on England in the World Cup… – yep, all these things have happened recently and I deserved an alcoholic treat! Sainsbury’s were selling three packs of Bacardi Breezers for £10 as a special offer – that’s twelve 275ml bottles, which is pretty reasonable! So we bought some last Saturday. The bottles are glass, fairly simple and classy looking with the famous bat logo. They are ‘Rum Refresher’ drinks containing 5.4% alcohol and represent 1.5 UK Units. Besides the rum, the drink contains sparkling water and fruit flavours. It is advised to drink it chilled, but it tastes fine straight from the cupboard too. We bought four bottles of three different flavours, which were red (ruby grapefruit), amber (tropical pineapple) and green (tropical lime), reminding me of traffic lights! Of course, I had to try each flavour in order to give a balanced review ;-) STOP AT RED This one is ruby grapefruit. It is quite fizzy at first, but the effect lessens. It is very red and sugary, tasting a bit like hard-boiled sweets. You can taste the red grapefruit and there’s a slight lemon kick to it. It smells like grapefruit as well. It isn’t unpleasant and I would drink this flavour again, but it’s not the best one. It is just a bit too sweet and there’s also a sugary aftertaste. Overall score = 7/10 GET READY AT AMBER The yellow one is tropical pineapple, my favourite of the three. This smells like real fresh pineapple – not like the artificial sweet flavour version – which
is very pleasant. It is light and refreshing, tastes nice and is easy to drink. You can taste the rum in this one. It is still a bit too sweet really for my tastebuds, but enjoyable and pleasant. Overall score = 8/10 GO AT GREEN Finally, this flavour is tropical lime. It tastes a bit sherbety and is again rather too sweet for me. It smells like lemon Hooch (or Lush deodorant!!). It has a slight sweet tang and is rather lemony too. There is a definite kick back, you can taste the rum more than in the other two flavours. I’m not so keen on this one. I would drink it again, but it’s my least favourite of the three varieties. Overall score = 6/10 To sum up Bacardi Breezers in general, I found they were obviously alcoholic, with the effects being noticeable after just one bottle. I had two bottles one night and it made me very sleepy. I don’t think I could have drunk more than two really. That’s why this opinion took me all week to research and write! Overall, I did enjoy them and would buy them again. They are nice and light, as well as being refreshing and easy to drink. I think they look ‘adult’ and alcoholic, so I don’t think children would be as tempted to try them, which is also a good thing. I don’t know how long the special offer is on for, but hopefully, we’ll buy some more bottles tomorrow. I’d like to try some other flavours available and after all, we’ve got to drown our sorrows now that England are out of the World Cup, haven’t we?

- 07/07/02 Great op but not sure about these not being for young people! "Alcopops" are designed by colour and taste to appeal to the younger generation! And in my town, all 9 pubs on the high street are swarming with people-you can pick out the underagers by just looking for these bottles! :op (dont get me wrong, other people drink these too!) |
