Advantages: Cheap and gets you drunk

Disadvantages: Uninteresting

There are some mysteries in this world which will never be explained. Such as, why is there only ONE monopolies and mergers commission? If olive oil is made out of real olives and vegetable oil is made of out real vegetables, is baby oil made out of real babies?

But for me, the real stumper is this...why is Bacardi rum so popular? Not just in this country but all over the world.

The drink itself comes from Cuba. "Bacardi" is one of the top 3 recognised brands in the world (Coca-cola and Microsoft, beating it respectively). The drink is nothing more than a white rum. Doesn't sound exciting, does it? A White rum. Colourless, practically odourless (just a hint of coconut) and tasteless. A near perfect spike in someone's drink. It's not really all that exciting. Malibu has a much sweeter taste and is lower in alcohol (which means you can pace yourself better), but it is nowhere near as popular as the Bacardi collossus.

I'm being a bit heavy-handed here. Bacardi rum isn't THAT bad. It's OK. A bit bland, a reasonable price and complements coke quite well. Neat, Barcardi is very smooth and could easily be drunk on it's own (please bear in mind that a drink is at its most potent when drunk neat!). I suppose the reason why Bacardi is so popular is because it is a break from normal vodka and coke. Bacardi normally costs about £1.60 a 35ml shot, though this can vary from pub to club.

Bacardi, if they are completely honest with themselves, shot to fame in the late 90's when they introduce the first alcopops by a big brand, the Bacardi breezer. People don't even say the name "Bacardi" anymore it's just "Breezer, please". But this doesn't make any sense, the reason that Barcardi Breezers were so popular is that you COULDN'T taste the Bacardi!

Barardi Breezers are an OK drink. You'll find that they are normally the cheaper alternative to the other alcopop brand like Smirnoff Ice and WKD's. They come in Cranberry, Lemon (their attempt to take some of Smirnoff Ice's market!), orange, Lime, pineapple and watermelon. They normally cost around £2.70 to £3 a bottle (275ml). I personally, wouldn't recommend them at all; because all it is, is an alcoholic fruit juice with no definitive flavour (Unlike, WKD original and Blue).

Bacardi on the whole is drink I would recommend to people who want a change from normal vodka and coke as Bacardi has a slight flavour to it whilst still retaining it's "Odourless" tag. The only problem is, go into any off-licence or shop and you will see similar bottles of white rum for half the price which taste the same. But funnily enough, on the optic range at your local pub or club you'll only see Bacardi there, in terms of the "white rum" market. This could go a long way to explaining why Barcardi is so popular. But taste-wise? Stick to vodka, it's much cheaper...

Interesting fact: Have you ever noticed the small bat sign on a Bacardi branded product? Wonder what it's there for? Back in the 1800's in Cuba, illiteracy rates were extremely high among adults. So Bacardi, had a problem on their hands, "How do you impress a brand, without resorting to words or letters?". Meanwhile, down in the refinery, a colony of bats took up residence there. No matter how hard they tried to get rid of them, the bats wouldn't leave. Eventually, these bats became the trademark of Bacardi. How? Well, if the people couldn't read the bottle, they would certainly notice the picture of a bat and, therefore, know that it was Bacardi rum they were buying; and that's why the bat on a Bacardi product became their trademark!

Summary: Drink if you need to get drunk, but don't expect anything interesting
