Advantages: Thick and creamy, All natural, 50% pure Irish cream

Disadvantages: You can't have just one glass!

Baileys is one of the best loved of all creme liqueurs, which is why over 1,500 glasses of it are consumed every minute of every day. Launched in 1974 and sold in over 130 countries, Baileys is a totally natural product that delivers a smooth, tasty and creamy experience. Many have tried to copy it, but only Baileys has that unique taste, as 50% of a bottle of Baileys is fresh Irish dairy cream. The key to this unique taste is the artful blending of whisky with the cream. Usually these two ingredients are incompatible. Through a mixture of art and science, the liqueur is blended without the use of additives or preservatives. Therefore the alcohol in the whisky acts as a natural preservative. The manufacturer guarantees the drink will stay fresh therefore for 24 months from the day it was made .... as if a bottle would last that long!

I tend to always have at least one bottle in the house in case visitors pop round or for special occasions. The trouble is, that if I pour myself a drink, I cannot have only one. The smooth, indulgent taste is just so more-ish. My favourite way to serve it is cool with a chunk of ice, but there are many cocktails which can be made with this oh so luscious beverage. How do some of these grab you:

BAILEYS BLIZZARD
• 2 parts Baileys
• 1 part peppermint schnapps
• 1 part brandy
• 4 parts cream
Blend with ice until smooth and serve straight up.

CALIFORNIA SHOT
• 1 shot Baileys
• 1 shot tequila
• 1 splash hot coffee
Pour Baileys and tequila into shot glass, add splash of hot coffee.
Top with whipped cream.

PEPPERMINT TWIST
• 1 part green Creme de Menthe
• 1 part Baileys
Layer Baileys over Creme de Menthe in a shot glass.

EMERALD ISLE
• 1 part Baileys
• 1 part brandy
• splash cream
Serve over ice with cream

Yummy!

Although the calorie content of one glass of Baileys is quite high at 117 calories because of a sugar content of 20% and fat content of 15%, it is quite a satisfying drink with it’s creamy richness. Baileys is an institution in Ireland, using over 4% of the country’s total milk production which makes the cream that goes into it. The whiskey used is a triple-distilled Irish. It contains all natural products, which probably accounts for the fact that it is that bit more expensive than other ‘taste alikes’. However, for me, the few pounds extra is well worth it because if you divide the extra cost between the glasses you get from one bottle, it’s a nominal difference anyway. The taste is so distinctive, and for flavour and thickness it beats all the other brands.

It is always easily available from your supermarket, and if you desire you can purchase it online at the Baileys website www.baileys.com where you can find lots more cocktail and food recipes. For me, Baileys is the premier cream liqueur. Others have tried to copy or beat it, but in my opinion, have never succeeded.

Causes uproar in the Gee household. Daughters love it. Neither Heather nor I like it (prefer Tia Maria & cream if we are going for this experience). Son hates it (beer & whisky fan), but describes it as a 'Tart's dronk', and pints with triumph at sisters saying "See what I mean !!". They ... er ... don't take kindly ....
