Advantages: lovely soothing drink
Disadvantages: if handled in the wrong way, likely to make you sick.
Evenings in front of the fire, romantic conversation, lights dimmed and something suitable to drink..... Baliey's has to be the drink for such moments. Bailey's is a rather interesting liqeur combining Irish whiskey and cream. It is on the high side of 30%proof - so you can get thoroughly newted on just a few glasses if like me you don't have much of an alcohol tolerance. The Baliey's expereince: Rich, creamy, and lacking the roughness you might normally associate with whiskey. It is also very sweet and I think its a great comfort drink, a pick-me-up for the long winter nights. It smells good, it tastes good. Generally recomended to drink it cool and not to keep an open bottle knocking around for too long - the cream can go off, which is just too grim to contemplate really. Drink it.... with ice? Now I have mixed feelings, its ok if you drink the Bailey's before the ice really melts, or else you get this depressing diluting effect. After dinner - not a drink to have with a meal, and not really an ideal party drink, it's a sit round being mellow sort of beverage. If you are going to use it in cocktails, please follow a recepie. Randomly mixing it with stuff can do strange and unpleasant things to the cream, resulting in a load of unhealthy looking white bubbles on the top of your drink - curdling isn't nice. ( I know, I made this mistake once) I would also add that mixing the cocktail in your digestive system is not significantly better - if you have a delicate consitution, better not to mix this with other alcoholic beverages during an evening or you may be distinctly ill. The only real down side with Baileys is that it can be a touch sickly - due to the huge amount of cream in it. Couple it with anything outragerous (fairground rides, enthusiastic dancing, curry etc) and the results can be quite unpleasant. However, drink it quietly on a relaxed night in and it will give you no end of delight and le
ave you feeling all warm and mellow. My final suggestion is that you shop around - you can pay through the nose for this stuff, prices vary, so have a look around before you buy and you could save yourself a few pounds.

- 12/03/02 You're right when you say that Baileys can cause an unpleasant reaction when mixed with other drinks! I made that mistake a few years back and I haven't been able to touch the stuff since! |

- 11/03/02 There's a bottle of this sitting in the cupboard as I type.
No ice though.
Baileys gonna have to stay there.
Just don't taste the same without the rocks ...

- 08/03/02 Another good opinion.
You have clearly excited the taste bugs of many here... I enjoy it once in a while...but I have to say it is a little too sickly for me in the main.
Thanks. |
