Advantages: Can taste nice and give you a bit of a boost

Disadvantages: Full of sugar and artificial ingredients, can taste nasty

Now, this stuff is something else. One day, I'll love it, the next it'll be the last thing I want to go near. The curious thing is, I have no understanding as to why I'm like this. It's like fluctuating marmite for me!

Irn Bru is a bright orange soft drink, made in Scotland, and apparently immensely popular up there. Incredibly sugary and full of flavourings, colourings and preservatives, it's definitely not something I'd recommend giving your kids unless you want someone climbing the walls!

However, the drink does contain caffeine and it does give me a bit of an energy boost without being subjected to something such as Red Bull. A 330ml can contains over 30g of sugar, which is a heck of a lot, but the drink doesn't actually taste too sugary to start with. You get a rather pleasant aroma when you open it. Sure, it smells full of the flavourings, colours and preservatives, but it's appealing and refreshing.

It has a kind of orange flavour, although I wouldn't necessarily choose this if someone asked me if I wanted an orange drink. It looks similar to the colour of Red Bull and other such energy drinks, but this has been around a bit longer, and I suppose in a way it's more like coke but flavoured differently and looking a lot more enticing.

I'd recommend giving it a go, at least, as it can taste really nice. The sugar content means that what you have eaten or drunk before may have an effect on whether you like it or not, but it's still an enjoyable drink on occasion. Just don't have it too much as there really is a lot of sugar and artificial ingredients that just cannot be good for you.

Irn Bru is available in plenty of places, but it doesn't seem to be as common as it once was. It falls within the price range of other carbonated soft drink such as Coke and Tango, etc, so expect to pay similar prices to these drinks depending on where you shop.

Summary: A kind of fluctuating marmite drink, for me!

Well being Scottish I can testify that I adore the stuff but then I was brought up on this, red cola, ice cream soda and anything else that was available in Solripe bottles.

The diet one is not too bad either (I find).
