Advantages: Sugar hit, fizzy, hangover remedy

Disadvantages: Colourings

One of my earliest memories is being very interested in the bright orange stuff on my Great Grans sideboard. She livid in a beautiful old house, had tonnes of antiques and some wartime toys hidden in the higgledy piggeldy rooms and I want the fizzy orange stuff on the side.

My Great Gran was Scottish, but forget whisky, Irn Bru was her tipple of choice. She always told me it was for adults!!!

It is made by Barr of Glasgow and has been manufactured for the last 108 years! It has been refined slightly over time thought to meet with food standards. As of it contains ammonium ferric citrate, sugar, 32 flavouring agents and 2 lovely e numbers... - sadly the lurid orange colour is not a natural thing.

The full recipe to Irn Bru is a secret - two people know of it and a copy is in a Swiss vault. - hence the lack of mimics!

They tast is very strong but even more prevalent than that is the aftertaste. It is a really fizzy drink with a citrus flavour combined with a vanilla tang but overall quite sweet and saccharine - all natural sugar apparently! After the rush, it's fairly watery.

The smell is really odd..... it smells like a kind of dried plant smell combined with sugar - i find it odd, but not unappetising! It is a distinct taste and has a marmitesque quality to it - you will love it or hate it.

It is about 40kcal per 100ml and this is pretty much sugar and carbohydrates, the colour might indicate iron, but it doesn't actually contain any!!!

I find it way quicker than coke or coffee to clear my head after drinking! All sugary drinks can have the effect of replacing sugar in the blood.

I know people that do drink it with alcohol, I personally find it too overwhelmed when put with a strong flavour.

It comes in 330ml cans 750ml bottles, litre and 2 litre large bottles and is available from most supermarkets and small stores drinks coolers.

Summary: Have a sugar hit fromScotlands second favourite drink!!
