Advantages: Scottish, tastes great

Disadvantages: Bad for your teeth

Irn Bru or Iron Brew as it was originally called is seen by many as part of the Scottish culture. It is made by Barr's a Scottish drinks company who began manufacture back in 1875.

On the Irn Bru website it claims that the recipie is such a closely guarded secret that it is held under lock and key in a vault in Switzerland and that it is a taste so precious, so unique that it is our chairman Robin Barr, and he alone, who blends the unique combination of 32 flavours that can be savoured in every sip."

So how do you describe the taste? If you have seen the adverts then you'll know the answer - Phenomenal.

According to the dictionary this means exceedingly or unbelievably great. I think I might just agree!!

I don't think that I have ever heard a good description of its taste. Its sold as a sparkling mixed flavor soft drink. When I drink it I can't describe the flavours, there is nothinbg that jumps out and says , its ..... You just have to try it.

Its certainly not everyones cup of tea. It is very sweet tasting and the orange, rust like colour puts a lot of people off, its made from girders you know (only kidding).

The Ingredients
Carbonated water, sugar (carbohydrate), citric acid, flavourings (including caffeine and quinine), preservative (E211), colours (E110, E124), ammonium ferric citrate (0.002%)

The nutritional information

107 kcal
26.3g sugar
0g fat
trace salt

Not particularly good but then it is a carbonated drink. There is a diet version but I don't think it tastes right. If you are going to drink irn bru then it just has to be full fat.

It is sold in cans, plastic bottles of various sizes and glass bottles, which you can return and get; I think it's about 30p for. My brother claims that it tastes better from a glass bottle than anything else.

There have been some brilliant ads over the years the best I feel has to be the one with the snowman in. If you haven't seen it go to the irn bru website. The lyrics are below,

"We're walking in the air. I'm sipping on an Irn Bru. My chilly snowman mate says he would like some too. I tell him get your own. He looks like he is going to cry. I tell him once again the Irn-Bru is mine. Now I'm falling through the air. I wonder where I'm going to land. He nicked my Irn-bru and let go of my hand."

This advert actually got taken off the air because it upset the kids!! Lots of the old adverts are being reshown just now which bring back memories.

Summary: Others have tried and failed to copy this drink - theres only one irn bru its gotta be Barrs Irn Bru

My brother agrees with your brother re the glass bottles - I have to buy him a case every time we are going to visit! Excellent for hangovers (with a cheese and ham toastie!)

I think it's too gassy and sweet but I I know a certain young man who drinks it when he's got a hangover- swears by it as a cure!
