In recent years I've been introduced to a wide variety of Czech drinks, but one product particularly stands out for me, Becherovka. Whenever I need to buy a gift for someone (if they enjoy a drink) then this is what I tend to buy. Becherovka was first produced by Josef Becher, a resident of Karlovy Vary, a spa city in the Czech Republic. Production began in Becher's chemist shop in 1807. In 1841 the secret herb recipe was passed on to his son Johann, who went on to open a factory to produce larger amounts of the increasingly popular drink. Looking at my notes which I wrote late last night after having a couple of glasses of this mysterious drink - I noticed I had written - Becherovka - a Luvverly drink. I was obviously under the influence looking at the spelling. I am not sure it is a truly lovely drink as it has a strange taste, soothing at first and inviting but there is an after taste of a very strong herb. I know it is very addictive and once you have had a taste you will definitely want another. So where does Becherovka come from?
