Advantages: Doesn't look like a non alcoholic beverage
Disadvantages: Pay more for less (!)
I love beer - not surprising really as it is in my veins, I am Australian after all - I love making my own beer, real ale and just about anything beery. However, there is the odd occasion when I have to be designated driver and I want the taste of beer but not the alcohol. I have tried a number of low or alcohol free beers over the years and mostly they taste like the stuff you put into beer before it ferments - hideous, think and revolting.
So I was surprised to find these at the supermarket and as I like the taste of Becks anyway, though to give it a go and me being cynical vowed it would taste rank.
I was pleasantly surprised. You get the clean Becks beer taste - nothing exceptional yet nothing offensive either - but none of the boringness or bitterness that tends to inhabit the usual alcohol free beers. As it also in the same bottle and similar label, they have cleverly avoided people having to deal with the derisions that you choose to drink something without alcohol in it. You can happily hold onto this bottle at a party, drink four of them before most people would notice the subtle sign. Maybe it is not important but at least it stops me from having to make sarcastic responses to people happily guzzling down alcohol and deriding my need to drink alcohol free beer.
I like this - ok it is not a good solution for somebody who likes to drink beer but in summary, it gives me the taste of the beer and I can happily drive home knowing I won't be pulled over for speeding or other erstwhile driving offences related to alcoholic driving!
It is a bit more expensive than your alcoholic stuff - like decaf coffee, you always have to pay more for less - but not inhibitively so more expensive.
This is the best one by far I think and more importantly, if it keeps people safe from drink drivers - it does the trick. It quenches my thirst, tastes like a beer and people will be hard pressed to know I wasn't drinking with the rest of them.
Summary: A good alcohol free beer from a leading brewer

- 27/05/09 I speak like that normally so how would they know LOL! Thanks for your comments, much appreciated. I can't take Red Bull especially when I drive, Fangio is my middle name and I think my red Hyundai is a Ferrari!!! |

- 22/05/09 People will know a few hours in to the evening when your friends are slurring their words and are a bit wobbly, and you're still coherent! Nice review - can't say I've ever tried it and I am unlikely to since I always drink Red Bull when I drive. |
