Black Sheep Riggwelter

Description: The strongest of the Black Sheep brews from Masham.

... price is usually quite a bit more than you're bog standard supermarket beers, but as really nice ales go, it is not to badly priced. I really do recommend a chilled bottle of this, for a treat at the weekends. I also believe it goes well with food, but is not necessarily a good session beer. For that, I would recommend their standard Black Sheep Ale. Overall, a very nice pint, but don't drink too many. It is rather strong, but incredibly tasty, and not at a bad price for Ale!...more

Last Thursday night we went to the Oakwood Beer Festival, held in the college buildings in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. This year's theme was beer from Sheep Country and the name of the Festival was The Great Baa! There were beers, wines and ciders from all the regions you would associate with sheep farming ~ such as Yorkshire, East Anglia, Wales and even Australia. Some of the bars were sponsored by famous breweries ~ the first one contained beers from Hardy & Hanson's, Wentworth and Black Sheep. It was at this bar that we had our first couple of drinks. We started on a Wentworth Oatmeal Stout and then went on to a beer we hadn't had for a ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Black Sheep of the Family (220 words)

Riggwelter: from the Old Norse words "rigg", meaning back or shoulder and "velte", to overturn. If a sheep rolls over onto its back and can't get up without help, local Dales dialect says it is rigged or riggwelted. Riggwelter is a full flavoured strong Yorkshire ale brewed using our unusual Yorkshire Square fermentation system. The result is a well balanced, deep chestnut coloured ale. With its distinctive roast malt, Golding hops and banana fruit aromas, Riggwelter has the strongest and most complex flavour of all the Black Sheep beers. ABV 5.7% Tasting Notes: Riggwelter comes across immediately as rich, ...  Read the complete review

Riggwelter is another beer from one of my favorite breweries, Black Sheep Brewery! The word Riggwelter means a sheep that is unable to stand, and after a few of these it will totally have you riggweltered! It is fairly strong, and the flavor is lovely and intense, nice malt with several different hop flavors throughout! I am planning on making an All Grain clone of this beer, at the weekend, because it really is one of my favorites! The price is usually quite a bit more than you're bog standard supermarket beers, but as really nice ales go, it is not to badly priced. Premium Review One drink and you'l be Rigged (160 words)

I'd better start off by telling you the strange meaning of the name of this rather fine ale. In yourkshire tounge (love it or hate it) rigged means to be drunk or fallen over on your back. And the welter part of the name comes from a sheep. As depicted on the front of the bottle (or pump) a pissed sheep. The ale iteslf is a proper real ale and has a very distinctive dark hops flavour, which gives it a hint of an aftertaste similar to a very mild guiness. But this is a much lighter ale which goes down smooth and has a nice hoppy flavour. I would recomend this ale to anyone. The flavour is far beter straight from the tap because the bottled beer ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Black Sheep Riggwelter: Well I'll be Riggwelter (219 words)

Riggwelter is a good old fashioned English Ales brewed at the Masham brewery deep in the Yorkshire Dales. The name comes from the old the old Norse, "Rygg" shoulder and "Velte" to overturn. So, when a sheep falls over and is unable to get up of it's own accord, it was known by the farmers to have rigged or been riggwelted. Drink too much and you will feel the same with an alcoholic content of 5.7%! It is a really dark colour with a very white head. You can really taste the alcohol in it and only after one bottle, you can certainly feel it! Quoting the Black Sheep Brewery website, it has hints of coffee, liquorice and ...  Read the complete review
