Advantages: Cheap and surprisingly palatable

Disadvantages: A small bottle and a low alcohol percentage

As a student, or an ex-student anyway, I'm always looking for a cheap way to get drunk. Although cheap wines are usually the most efficient method, I find the harsh vinegary palate of most mass-produced cask wines to be unpleasant, and it's all I do to stop myself grimacing each time I take a sip. However, Black Tower changed all that.

Black Tower is a German wine, available in both red and white, although I usually only buy the white. It comes in a rather classy black opaque bottle and the wine itself has a mild, almost fruity taste, not bitter but not overly sweet either. Although I'll be the first to admit that this isn't the smoothest of tipples, and it does have a slightly acidic aftertaste, compared to the usual anti-freeze I'm forced to drink it might as well be a Bordeaux. Of course I usually bought it to warm up for a typically decadent student drinking session, but I'm sure it could also be drunk over a romantic candle lit dinner or as a relaxing nightcap.

Black Tower comes in 75cl bottles, which I admit isn't very much, but on the plus side each bottle only costs about £3. I usually buy two at a time, which will normally tide me over for about, oh...6 hours. Then again, most people still have a liver, and can probably make it last a bit longer. The other downside is that it isn't a particularly strong wine, only being 9.5%. Of course, that can be solved by just drinking more, not that I'm trying to insight binge drinking or anything. Seriously, I'm not.

In summary Black Tower is a very reasonable wine considering the price, and can be a Godsend in a time of such financial turmoil. But remember, please drink responsibly.

Summary: It's a lot better than anti-freeze
