Advantages: Smooth and light bitter
Disadvantages: Sometimes gives me a headache.
Boddingtons was once promoted as the cream of Manchester is now the cream of almost anywhere and is sold in over thirty countries.
Having initially started out as a lager drinker on leaving school, I made a career move into the more sensible field of bitter some years later and have remained so to this day. Although I will confess that I am one of those who'll swig down anything if it's on offer. Less gas, more taste, a deeper fuller flavour were the main reasons for the switch, along with the fact that bitter, although not immune, is less likely to be watered down in many a dubious establishment.
Boddingtons is a very smooth brew with a rich neat malty taste and a creamy texture. When poured it appears a deep golden colour with a very smooth white creamy head. It's much paler in colour than a John Smiths and is less heavy. Some might find the lack of fizz overwhelmingly flat but for others this creamy brew will slide down pleasantly.
Boddingtons's in a can was one of the first bitters to make use of that remarkable late 20th century invention: the widget. The device that allows a canned beer to mimic the qualities of a draught beer, and it really does produce quite a good imitation. I have to confess though that despite my enjoyment of the canned drink it does have its down side. Only after drinking one or two cans on a late afternoon is enough to induce in me a rather uncomfortable headache by early evening. It does not happen on every occasion but I would say 80% of the time it does. This is not the case with draught or other widgeted beers. I have never had this experience with cans of John Smiths for example and can only assume therefore that it is down to the chemicals that are added to the canned beer. Nevertheless, this does not spoil my satisfaction and a can of "Boddies" with my Sunday roast always goes down nicely.
Summary: A light bitter

- 15/10/08 Sadly but a shadow of it's former self. If you're a Mancunian then I can strongly recommend Hydes, Robinsons and JW Lees. |
