Advantages: Widely available, entertaining to pour
Disadvantages: Lack of flavour, letting the ad-men win the game
The Boddingtons ad agency want you to understand that this is a "creamy" beer, so their current crop of TV ads make use of a cow (albeit with a bloke's voice - what's that all about?) to emphasise the idea. Unfortunately, although it tastes smooth, the container of liquid in question doesn't actually taste much of beer! The can relies on its widget of gas (nitrogen?) to foam the contents up to such an extent that you need to wait a minute or so for it to clear (like draught Guinness). I'm afraid the enjoyment you get from watching this almost mesmerising and admittedly very clever process probably outweighs any enjoyment you'll ever get in the tastebud department. To me, it's quite weak and thin with a slightly "tinny" undertone. I'm getting....<sip> ....bicycle tyres with a sweetish undercurrent of toffee. I'm getting.... <swig>....a shaving foam consistency and a hint of beer (just a hint, mind!). I'm getting.....heartburn - must be the chemicals! Another victory for the guys in marketing. "Style over content" is the name of the game and everybody gets won over by that laddish cow in the ads. Maybe their pub beer's better!

- 10/08/01 Sadly, though convenient, all tinned beers fall way short of even bottled beers, let alone the real stuff. However, in the case of Boddingtons, it hasn't been a beer worthy of drinking for many years. Bland is an understatement. |

- 09/08/01 Short, sweet, to the point. Sigh, I'm a waffler you know! |

- 09/08/01 Some may argue about the importance of price though, at 4 for £10 in your local Co-op right now (for the next two weeks anyway) its a total bargain, £2.50 for 4x440ml cans. Still, I wouldnt touch the stuff even at that price. Steve |
