Advantages: Lasts for ages, unusual but nice flavour
Disadvantages: Gets sickly after a while, a bit oily with cold water
I got a bottle of this because I was getting bored of my usual Robinson's orange cordial and about a month ago I had quite a bad cold and had taken to having hot cordial at work and wanted something that actually tasted nice hot. I got it from Sainsburys, my usual supermarket is Morrisons and I've never seen it for sale there, so I don't think it is that easy to find.
I can't remember the exact price but it was in the region of £3-4 which is a lot more expensive than most cordials but it comes in a glass bottle and looks good quality so I didn't let that stop me buying it. There are a few cordials but I thought I would choose the elderflower as it sounded different and I thought it might be quite soothing to my cold.
Packaging...
The packaging it lovely, it comes in a green tinted bottle like that of white wine and has a clear label on with the bottle green drinks logo and a nice sketch in yellow of a flower. It looks really good and the packaging is really different and a great selling point. I've actually kept hold of the bottle because I didn't want to throw it away! It has a soft metal screw cap.
The Cordial...
I was surprised by the consistency of the cordial, it is much thicker than others I have had and has a slight syrupy feel about it but it still pours easily and I would still class it as liquid. When you combine it with water you can almost see it separating from the water a bit like oil would do when poured into water. So I ended up stirring it into the water to get it to mix in. Even then you can kind of see an oiliness in the glass which is a bit odd looking. Yet when you drink it this isn't particularly noticeable except that the drink goes down quite smoothly and does have a soothing effect on your throat.
The cordial is really concentrated and you really do only need to put a tiny bit in the glass. I made the mistake of putting quite a lot in the first time and not only was it really strong but it also got in the back of my throat making me cough loads!
The taste is pleasant, I've never tried anything that is elderflower flavour before so didn't know what to expect. it is quite hard to describe as it is a flowery taste which doesn't sound good, yet it is really nice. You have to try it for yourself to understand the taste. It is quite sweet and is a good substitute for chocolate if you're having a sweetness craving. It is also good at curing a sweetness craving if you're dieting. I wouldn't advise having this drink with a meal as it is quite sickly and would possibly clash with foods.
When I tried it with hot cordial it was much better. It seemed to melt into the hot water and didn't require stirring like when I mixed it with cold. I also thought the flavour suited a hot drink better and I enjoyed it much more. It was ideal for when I felt quite ill and I found it really comforting.
The bottle lasted me ages and I did enjoy it, yet by the end of it I was quite glad to go back to boring orange cordial. It is a really tasty drink but I wouldn't say it is great for drinking regularly as I got a bit fed up of it after a while and found it sickly the more I drank it. Therefore despite enjoying it I haven't bought another bottle since and possibly wouldn't do in the near future. It is definitely better drank occasionally or for special occasions. I would be tempted to try it again if I got another cold though...
