... is not a Islay malt to be drunk young. The distillery offers a broad range of bottlings at various ages. The baseline Legend has no age statement, but is probably 7-8 years old - and shows it. Bowmore 12 Year Old Whisky ... is possibly the best single malt scotch that no one has tried. It is most often found in the 12 year old variety, though the distillery offers a variety of ages for this excellent malt. Just like Lagavulin and Laphroaig, Bowmore comes from the island of Islay in Scotland, and in my experience this fact alone signifies a superior quality. But don't take my word for it, try it for yourself. Bowmore boasts a fairly complex taste and smooth texture. It smells less of alcohol that Laphroaig, but there's not less in it (43%). Bowmore Cask Strength ... first question that yoo must ask as regards this opinion is “Why go for cask strength Malt whisky ?”. To start from first principles, generally the only sensible way to buy cask strength whisky is when you can buy it duty free, in other words, when visiting the proper duty free shops when countries outside of the EC. However (see below) there are occasions when it can be 'more affordable'. Being higher in alcohol content, the duty is higher than normal whisky, and since relatively little is sold by retail in the UK, then you generally have to pay ‘full list price’, with no ‘special offers’ at the likes of Safeways/S... Bowmore Legend ... Legend Islay Malt Whisky is a not uncommon sight on supermarket shelves. It is not infrequently sold as a special offer, and I have bought bottles in the past 18 months on offer (I think it was Sainsbury’s) at £25 for 2 bottles (definitely a bargain, then in my opinion). However, the BEST offer on it that I have seen is at the Edinburgh Makro store where, from 2 May for 2 weeks it is on offer at £54.99 + VAT for 6 bottles. This works out at £10.77 a bottle including VAT. Alternatively, 2 bottles cost £12.91 each including VAT. Thus, my business Xmas presents are sorted at a stroke early (well 12 of them anyway), and at a very economical price. Soon ...
