Drink - Coniston Bluebird 4.2% Coniston Bluebird 4.2%
Drink / A fine session ale with a light golden colour. The intense resinous and spicy hop character, which is the beer's hallmark, is derived from the use of unusual quantities of English Challenger hops each bale being individually and personally selected by the brewer. ... bitter has recently started appearing in the supermarket near to me, and I’m a sucker for trying out all those bottled ‘real ales’, so it didn’t take much for me to give it a go! It’s produced by a micro brewery, Coniston Brewing Company, based up in the Lake District – in actual fact this is the work of two men, Ian Bradley and Rob Irwin. Bluebird bitter is what’s known as a “single varietal” hop beer, and a “session” beer. The taste is distinctly light and hoppy, and very clean. There is a faint tinge of fruitiness, perhaps citrus. It won the “Champion Beer of Britain award 1998R...

... that much. There have been brews of this type in the past. Probably the most well-known is Manns Brown. This is a traditional brown ale style of the type that is regrettably no longer in favour. Nevertheless it is a very tasty beer and at 2.0%abv, unlikely to cause you to come into conflict with the boys in blue unless you consume abnormal quantities. Now, one of my favourite brewers, Brakspears, has come up with an offering. True, it has not been introduced purely in the interests of safer motoring. Brakspears 2.5 has also been created in response to the odious Michael Portillo’s suggestion that a lower excise duty rate be levied on beers of 2.5%abv a...

... not one of Brakspear's better efforts then! Hang on a mo though, what's this? You've rated it four stars! What gives? Ah, grahamt showing a bit of bias? Brakspear can do no wrong! I might have guessed. Actually no. The reason for the title is that, no matter how hard you look you are unlikely to find any of this brew for sale. Ted & Bens was a one-off production run and (to date) has not been repeated. A great pity because this is actually an exceptionally good beer. Ted and Ben work at Brakspear and specified the beer that bears their names. Just to show how all employees at Brakspear have opinions that are valued by the company, neither is...
