Advantages: Relatively Inexpensive, Rehydrates much more efficiently than typical juice.
Disadvantages: UK does not carry the range that is available in the USA.
Gatorade is seemingly a fairly new product in the UK, and many people, actually the majority of people are still probably unfamiliar with it as a brand completely, and usually I find myself having to explain what this good stuff is. I understand that in the United States however, Gatorade is a very well known and popular drink, available in pretty much all corner shops and vending machines. I think that's the way it's heading in the UK aswell, as people recognise that this stuff is actually very good stuff. Certainly I think high profile drinkers of Gatorade like Ussain Bolt will cause people to recognise it as a serious product.
Gatorade is basically a drink that contains plenty of salts, electrolytes and other chemicals, that is meant for rehydration of the body quicker than drinking water would achieve. Really it is meant for drinking after intense physical exercise, to ensure the body recovers and replaces lost products as quickly and as efficiently as possible.
At the beginning of this month, I was in LA, where the temperature during the day was easily well in excess of 100 degrees, and it wasn't particularly cool at night either. In these temperatures, I found it was necessary to keep a drink with me at all times, otherwise I would physically start to feel myself dehydrating. I started out buying bottles of water, but I found I couldn't drink them fast enough, and although it did cool me down a little bit, it took a big volume to have this effect. This meant I was feeling bloated and generally quite ill feeling.
After speaking to some French tourists about the problem, they suggested I try Gatorade, and it was a very useful tip! I could drink an entire bottle of water in this hot weather and still feel thirsty, but after a drink of gatorade, perhaps a fifth of the bottle, I found my thirst was quenched for a significant period of time. The stuff is miraculous! I can assure you that it really does rehydrate you quicker than your normal drink, say water for example.
In the US, the product is sold in big, bulky square type bottles. In the UK however, it's sold in slim bottles similiar to it's rivals like Powerade. It is generally sold only in orange too, however I did see a red coloured gatorade in superdrug the other day, and whilst I can't seem to find it online at this minute, this is definately a drink I will try in the near future. As far as the taste is concerned, Gatorade Orange tastes like moderately diluted orange squash, though it does have a kind of weakly metallic taste to it aswell that is the salts and essential replenishment products.
The bottom line is this stuff really does work, I have proved it to myself. It's not badly priced either, with individual bottles costing under £1 in WHSmith, and a multi pack of 4 bottles costing only £3 in Tesco.
Summary: Definately keep this product in mind incase you are ever at risk of dehydration in the future.
