Advantages: Lovely if you love thick syrupy soft drinks
Disadvantages: No fire, as promised....
I went to my local shop the other day and I came across this for 39p for 1.5L bottle on special offer. I had got in mind to buy my usual, favourite can of 'Old English' Ginger Beer which is why I was in the shop in the first place but I couldn't resist this offer as I adore Ginger beer, its my favourite so I cleared the shelf and struggled to carry it all home!
So I'm reviewing the bottle in this variety and not the can as shown on this review though it is exactly the same product of course.
The Packaging is a 1.5 litre clear plastic recyclable bottle with a red screw on/off lid and red paper labeling around it's middle. You can see the pale yellow liquid inside. On the front of the bottle in white writing I'm told that the brand name is 'Idris' (one I'd never heard of before!) It's called Firey Ginger Beer and says 'try me if you dare!' Oh I dare lol On the back of the bottle it tells me what to expect, and the ingredients but oddly enough no Nutritional table and no contact details apart from telling me that it's a Britvic product.
Whats On Offer....
'Feel the heat of Idris Spicy Ginger Beer Brew as it teases and tantalises your mouth with it's naturally sizzling flavours. Let you taste buds explode with a sensation that will have you craving for more!'
So ok me being a fan of rich, strong, blow your head off type ginger beer I was very excited at reading that. However I didn't expect it to and I wasn't disappointed.
Them claims are completely flawed to my taste-buds!
The drink is syrupy and fairly flat with no real body or oomph. In the bottle you can hear the 'sizzle'. Not fizzy as such just as I say a kind of sizzling noise. Taste wise its ginger flavoured. No doubt about that. However it is incredibly sweet and syrupy perfect if you like very, very sweet drinks. The thing about it though is that it's like its naturally sweet opposed to sweeteners so I assume it really is heavily ladened with sugar though as there is no nutritional information so I'm not sure!
So yes its thick and not really bubbly. So how about the claim that it's firey? Well I wouldn't of of thought it was and even after reading it I'm surprised they think it is. If I'd have drank it I'd of assumed it was just a run of the mill stores own cheap brand as this has no kick in it at all. Not on my taste-buds whilst I'm drinking it and not after I've swallowed. It gives no tingle at all. Also when it's drank it leaves a slight kind of tinny salty taste so when they say you want to drink more that is kind of true cos you feel like you need to quench your thirst somehow. This isn't a great drink to refresh yourself with!
Overall....
It's great if you like really sweet drinks and it does as I mentioned taste of ginger as it's meant to. Though it isn't firey and it really is nothing special. I don't mind it but I wouldn't go out of my way to buy it and neither does it fill me with joy at thought of grabbing a glass, its just an ok fizzy carbonated soft drink!
The only supermarket I've seen it in is Tesco's and I've never seen the can as shown on the top of this review. So the only price I have is £1.29 1.5L bottle in Tesco's.
Other Idris flavours include....
Cream Soda
Dandelion and Burdock
Summary: An ok soft drink but far too sweet for moi!
