Advantages: Very bubbly and maintains its fizziness in the bottle

Disadvantages: Unpleasant saccharin aftertaste

Normally I do most of my shopping in Asda or Sainsbury's, but from time to time I nip to my local Costco or Makro to see if they have any bulk purchases on offer. Last week in Makro I noticed a multipack of 8 x 2 litre bottles of R Whites Diet Lemonade priced at 3.79 + VAT, which equated to around 55p a bottle. I thought this was reasonable for a branded bottle of lemonade which would normally cost around £1 in the supermarkets so I bought a pack of 8.

The lemonade comes in a 2 litre recyclable clear plastic bottle with an easy to open blue screw cap lid. Around the centre of the bottle is a yellow and grey striped label featuring a picture of a lemon and the words "R Whites Premium Diet Lemonade" in blue lettering. The back of the label clearly lists the ingredients, and the nutritional information states that each 100ml provides just 2kcal, which is great if you're watching your figure.

When poured into a glass, the lemonade appears crystal clear and very fizzy, with a delicate aroma of lemons. The drink does maintain its fizziness in the glass, and in the bottle it lasts for a good few days after opening - especially if stored in the fridge.

Initially the lemonade provided a refreshingly fizzy, tangy fruitiness, but unfortunately this gave way to an unpleasant synthetic saccharin-like aftertaste - you know, the distinctive flavour that is normally reserved for the cheap and nasty supermarket value brands.

Overall, I was disappointed with this lemonade. It wasn't foul or undrinkable, but equally it wasn't that great - I had expected R Whites to be far superior to its unbranded competitors. I think even at the discounted warehouse price, I would have to think twice about buying it again.

Summary: Disappointingly not much better than store value brands.
