Advantages: Cheap, No Added Sugar
Disadvantages: None
Okay so it might sound odd, but I don't like drinking plain water and I never have. I know that it's good for you and it's cheap, but I just don't like it. I also don't drink milk or milky drinks either, which leaves me with very few options - fizzy drinks (not really the best for your teeth, your wallet or your health), fruit juice (is quite expensive when you drink lots of it) or squash, which I tend to drink the most.
As you may have guessed, I'm quite fussy about what I drink and because of this there aren't many diluted squash drinks that I like. For example I find Ribena absolutely disgusting, as it's like drinking syrup and leaves a nasty coating in your mouth. However I do really enjoy drinking Robinson's Apple and Blackcurrant squash as it's got a much better consistency and taste than Ribena.
I tend to choose the 'Special R' version which has no added sugar, as I find that I can't notice the difference between this version and the original version, so I may as well go for the healthier option. As with other squash drinks, you dilute the juice drink with water (the bottle suggests 1 part concentrate to 4 parts water) which means that a 1 litre bottle goes a long way and that a bottle works out very cost effective. This no added sugar version contains only 5 calories in every 250ml serving, which is equivalent to less that 1% of an Adult's guideline daily amount. It also contains no artificial colours or flavours, no artificial sweeteners and no salt. It is also suitable for vegetarians.
I love the taste of Apple and Blackcurrant together and this is the best squash that I have found. The drink has a pleasant sweet blackcurrant aroma to it, which is not too overpowering or sweet. As it is a concentrate drink, you can make it as strong or as weak as you like - my personal preference is to have it mid-strength and a nice pinky purply colour. The taste is very nice, sweet without being sickly and fruity, but not artificial tasting. As long as you do not make it too strong there is no unpleasant aftertaste either, as I find that you get with some drinks. I enjoy drinking this squash made up with water straight from the tap, chilled water or hot water from the kettle in the winter (if you haven't ever tried it hot then give it a go - it's lovely and smells delicious!).
There are often offers on this squash in the supermarkets (Tesco are currently selling this at 2 x 1 litre bottles for £1.80), but the full price for a 1 litre bottle is approximately £1.07. As there are approximately 20 servings per bottle, this works out at just over a very reasonable 5p per glass! Robinsons' Special R Squash Apple and Blackcurrant is also available in 2 and 3 litre bottles.
Summary: Makes Water Taste Better!
