Advantages: Good flavour, no sugar

Disadvantages: Contains artificial sweeteners

This apple and blackcurrant squash really stands out. I chose it because I was told by my doctor to stop drinking caffeine, so I needed to replace my daily drinks (coffee, tea, coke) with something else. In addition to getting decaffeinated versions of these, I also decided to branch out and expand my range of drinks so that I wouldn't feel deprived. Of all the drinks I have since tried, this squash is my current favourite.

The first thing you notice about this beverage is the colour. It comes in a clear plastic bottle and so you can see the inviting ruby-red shade of the drink inside.

You mix the squash with 4 parts water for every 1 part squash in order to dilute it and make it drinkable. One serving consists of 50ml of water and 200ml of squash. Obviously you don't have to be exact about this and will soon learn the ratios you personally prefer - I like mine a little weaker than the recommendations because otherwise it's a bit too sweet for me.

The flavour of the squash is very good. The blackcurrant flavour is quite strong and so the drink reminds me of Ribena (although I find the light Ribena has a much more chemically taste than this does). The apple flavour is more subtle but you can definitely taste it and it lightens the flavour is a pleasant way.

One great thing about the squash is that it is sugar free, meaning that it is very low in calories. It contains only 5 calories per 250 ml serving. However, the way it achieves this is through use of saccharine and aspartame. I find this a little sneaky as the bottle proudly proclaims "no artificial flavours." I suppose they mean no artificial fruit flavours but this should in my opinion be clearly stated as what is sweetness if not a flavour?

The squash does contain some real juice. It is 8% apple and 2% blackcurrant. When I read this I was surprised as the blackcurrant flavour is so strong. Regardless, this is not much juice and won't really count as one of your 5 a day!

Another positive about this squash is the way it makes me feel full. For some reason it seems to curb my appetite as I have been snacking a lot less than usual since getting this.

Summary: If you aren't worried about saccharine and aspartame, this squash is an excellent choice
