Advantages: refreshing
Disadvantages: lack of bite
On the back of the cider wave thats been sweeping the country over the past 2 years, Bulmers pear recently found its way into the cellar at work last month. Since I am a big cider drinker I thought I'd give it a go, plus it always useful to know what youre selling.
At £2.10 in the pub I work in and around £2.90 at other outlets this is by no means a cheap drink. Thankfully the bottle is a pint size and if you are lucky enough it will be served in a large glass with ice.
Although it is not a cheap drink, few ciders are theese days (not the 3 litre offlicense jobbies) and comes with the associated level of quality from the bulmers brand.
This drink is very refreshing on ice and many people will undoubtedly be enjoying it throughout the nations beer gardens this summer. However for me the taste is just not right.
Many ciders these days come in novelty flavours such as berry, toffee apple etc and many of these manage to remain tastey for the few few bottles before needing a change of drink. This pear cider however has a very similar taste to the apple bulmers but is lacking in the bite department. I know its not supposed to have the bite of an apple cider but due to the nature of the taste I always expect it and am always dissappointed.
Strenghtwise at 4.6% this is not a particually strong drink and is therefore more suited to a beer garden on a hot day.
Overall I would say that the lack of bite on this one really kills it for me, but it is well worth trying out as it does seem to be a popular drink.
Summary: not for me
