Advantages: Refreshing, lovely taste
Disadvantages: Quite filling and gassy, expensive for cider
Until only a few years ago if you said your favourite drink was cider you would probably have been laughed at or frowned upon in some circles, as images of underage drinkers with 2 litre bottles of brands such as White Lightening crept into their minds. Since the cider revolution a few summers ago, cider has suddenly crept up in the "cool rankings" with brands such as Bulmers emerging.
I'm not ashamed to admit it but I have always enjoyed cider. Sneer all you want but I was partial to the odd pint of Woodpecker or can of Strongbow (in my own home obviously not in public). Back in those days the greatest variation you got on your apple cider was it sweet or dry, or from a can or plastic bottle. These days since the revolution I now have a strong liking towards Bulmer Pear Cider.
***What is it?***
Bulmers Pear Cider does exactly what it says on the tin (well the bottle) a refreshing cider best served over ice made from PEARS!!!
***Packaging***
The cider comes in a brown glass bottle. The standard sized bottle is 568ml with a bright green top which requires opening with a bottle opener. There are also larger sized 1litre bottles available which have a screw top.
On the front of the bottle is a bright green label with the Bulmers logo in white font. The label has a description of the cider and also the alcohol content per bottle ( 2.6 per 568ml bottle)
***Price***
Asda recently had a special offer on Bulmers pear cider - 8 568ml bottles for £5 which was excellent value. Usually a 568ml bottle is priced at around £1.90 in supermarkets.
The price varies in pubs and restaurants. In reasonably priced pubs a 568ml bottle costs around the £3 mark, slightly more expensive than other drinks in particular lagers. I have paid £5.50 for a 568ml bottle in Newcastle airport before, so be warned, just because this is a "cider" do not assume that its cheap.
***The Cider***
When the cider is poured into a glass (over ice) the scent is fresh and there is a very fruity and a distinctive pear scent.
Bulmers Pear Cider is light in colour, the same colour as a light white wine, not at all dark and orange coloured like apple ciders are.
Taste wise as you take the first sip there is a very distinctive pear taste which is very light and refreshing. Serving the cider cold over ice emphasises this refreshing taste. The next few mouthfuls taste less of pear and more just a refreshing fruity taste. The cider does not taste at all sharp and there is no real strong aftertaste more just a light fruity taste. The cider is quite fizzy, which I find filling and my stomach feels gassy after drinking one pint, this makes me get full very easy especially if I am eating a meal whilst drinking this cider.
In comparison to apple ciders Bulmers pear cider does taste quite weak and watery. I like this taste as it is soft and not at all bitter or sour in the way some ciders are, others may find it too weak.
***Overall***
This is a fantastic refreshing alcoholic drink. Even if you do not like traditional ciders, you may still like this Pear Cider from Bulmers due to its light refreshing taste. A positive is that because it does not have a particularly strong taste it is very easy to drink. However the drink is quite gassy, and makes me burp and get full up quickly. If you get full quickly then after 2 bottles of this cider you will struggle to drink much more of this and feel like you are going to burst. Don't let this put you off though; a perfect beer garden drink!
Summary: A great refreshing summer pear cider, best served over ice
