Advantages: Low cal; Low fat; Convenient

Disadvantages: Mild tast of dark choc; Powdery

I think of hot chocolate made with milk as a luxury treat but for days when I want a less indulgent treat I have various sachets of instant (usually low fat) hot chocolate in my cupboard. I know the sachets work out slightly more expensive per drink tham the jars of hot chocolate but they are portable and allow me to have lots of different flavours of hot shocolate in to such my mood and taste at the time.

After getting soaked a couple of times yesterday I felt it was the ideal time to try Cadburys Highlights dark chocolate.

As with most instant hot chocolates this is very simple to make - put powder in cup, add boiled water and stir well. Simple as this is to make there are a few pointers. Firstly do not use a too large mug as too much water obviously will lead to a unpleasantly weak drink, there is no guidance on the sachet as to the ideal amount of water to use. It is best to use water than is just off the boil to make this drink. And really really stir well. I don't tend to add any milk as I find that this doesn't really improve the drink much.

Once made the drink looks darker than usual instant hot chocolate with a barely noticeable scent of chocolate wafting off it.

The drink does not taste strongly of dark chocolate but there is a discernable taste of bournville chocolate about it, this is probably not that suprising considering there is only 6% dark chocolate in the ingredients. Other than that the drink is pleasant amd it does not taste overly sweet which many low cal hot chocolates can. If you haven't stirred the drink well enough there can be a quite powdery texture to the drink, which increases as you get to the end of the cup.

Each sachet contains 35 cals, 1.6g of fat and 1.1g of sat fat. They contain aspartame and phenylalanine. It is suitable for vegetarians. Two sachets cost about 50p in supermarkets and are often on offer.

I wouldn't say this is my favourite instant hot chocolate but I would probably buy it again.

Summary: Not destined to be a favourite
