Advantages: , low calorie
Disadvantages: Cost a touch more than some instant hot drinks
If you want a chocolate fix that's almost as good as sinking your teeth into a few chunks of Dairy Milk or wrapping your tongue round a Flake, but without the worry of piling on the pounds through exorbitant amounts of calories, then don't despair. You do have choices, or to be precise you have Options. They're a range of low calorie instant hot drinks. Available in an assortment of flavours (and in various pack sizes).
* Belgian Choc * is the closest Options to a conventional hot chocolate drink. I was really surprised how creamy it tasted considering it's a powder and hot water mix rather than milk. It's nice, but a little too sweet for my taste. I'm not generally a big fan of hot choc, so I didn't expect to love this one. Rich and chocolaty though, I'm sure it would suffice the cravings of both chocoholic and sweet-toothed people.
* Mint Madness * is probably my favourite. Think along the lines of Cadbury's Mint Crisp, and then think blended to a smooth liquid, and warmed through. Absolutely delicious, can't get enough of it. The mint and chocolate compliment each other to perfection, and the balance of taste sensations is just right. Warming choc and refreshing mint.
* Indulgent Irish Cream * stumped me. Hubby made the drinks for me so I didn't influence myself on preconceived ideas of how they would taste and to be honest I thought (not knowing the flavours) that this one was banana and choc!!!
It was pleasant and drinkable, but I certainly wouldn't say it tasted of Irish Cream. The back of the pack suggests 'adding a dash of Irish Cream Liqueur' to it, which is perhaps what they are banking on to give the intended flavour. This defeats the purpose of drinking a low calorie treat, though!
* Outrageous Orange * is another definite winner, think along the lines of melted down Cadbury's Milk Chocolate Orange, and that's almost what you have. A smooth, creamy choc orange drink. The orange was, in my opinion, just a little too subtle. You could taste and recognise it, but it could have done with a touch ore of the orange flavour. But still, without a doubt, really tasty.
* Turkish Delight * was surprising! Surprising that anyone would make a Turkish Delight flavour hot drink, but more surprising that it actually tasted like Turkish Delight too. If you like Fry’s Turkish Delight (the little chocolate coated bar) then you should enjoy this too. It's the traditional delicate rose flavour, so has a slightly perfumed taste and smell, but all the same enjoyable.
* Tempting Toffee * breaks the mould. I had to be careful throughout this review, not to state Options to be simply Hot Chocolate Drinks. 5 of the 6 I've covered are, but this one is just toffee. I knew as soon as I had it in front of me that it was toffee. Took me a while to pinpoint a comparison product though - I decided on Werthers Original (the toffee sweets). It's sweet, but not to the extreme, and perhaps a little thinner in consistency to the choccie Options, but very, very nice.
You don't have to worry about spending a fortune to indulge either. Options are available in a twin sachet pack, each sachet holding enough for one drink and will set you back around the figure of 50p. There is also a multi-pack (6 x twin sachet) which is around the £2.00 mark, and 2 sizes of jar - 132g and 264g at around £1.50 and £2.50 respectively. And all varieties mentioned are suitable for vegetarians, gluten free and around 40kcals a serving.
So, do I recommend them? Yes, absolutely! They're an excellent range of low calorie hot drinks that are as tasty and fulfilling as their calorific counterparts.
Enjoy :O)
