Advantages: tastes great, low calorie
Disadvantages: contains aspartame
I found a few Options hot chocolate sachets in the cupboard recently, one of which was the 'Belgian Choc' which I had bought ages ago, but never got round to trying.
This is an Instant hot chocolate mix from the Options range, which contains many flavours. Being, simply Belgian chocolate flavour, this makes it the plainest of the flavours in the range. Really, I think it is just supposed to be normal hot chocolate, but with a fancy name to make it sound more interesting!
The hot chocolate comes either in a jar, or an individual sachet containing enough for one mug of hot chocolate, and it's the sachet that I have.
Making the hot chocolate is very easy, as it is simply a case of emptying the sachet into the bottom of a mug, and pouring boiling water into it. When I tipped this into the mug, I could see that the powder was a fairly pale colour and the powder was very fine.
On adding the water, I began to stir, and noticed that it took quite a lot of stirring to get rid of any lumps, which I found quite surprising really as the powder had been so fine.
The reason this had stayed in my cupboard so long without me trying it, is because I thought that it would taste quite bland. I sometimes buy the Galaxy hot chocolate from the Klix machine at work, and as it comes in a small cup, I can just about get through it, but if drinking a full mug of hot chocolate, I usually prefer the flavoured ones, as I find them easier to drink.
I was surprised then, to discover that I really liked the taste of this. It's chocolaty, without tasting too artificial, and the level of sweetness is just right. I often find with hot chocolate it is too sickly sweet, or too bitter, but this was bang in the middle, which made it very drinkable. It's quite light too, it doesn't taste too rich or sickly at all, and I managed to finish the whole mug easily.
The packaging of the product, seems to put a lot of emphasis on the fact that one mug of this only contains 37 calories. Whilst that may be the case, it is also worth noting that it contains the sweetener aspartame, the use of which is quite controversial - I suggest you try Wikipedia if you want to know more, rather than having me try to explain it!
A sachet of this hot chocolate costs 20p and the 220g tub costs £2.47 from ASDA.
Overall, this was a nice hot chocolate, and I would buy it again. It was just the right sweetness for me, and not too sickly. Recommended!
