I worked for many years in Liverpool. When I first moved to Merseyside at the end of the 60s, it was a bit of a beer desert. The local beer was Higsons and even then, although it had a faithful local following, it hardly constituted an example of brewing excellence. A new brewery by the name of Peter Walker started up in Warrington and supplied a number of tied pubs in Liverpool. The beer was excellent and so became the beer of choice for those who appreciated what they drank. Higsons never really responded to the challenge and in 1985 succumbed to a takeover bid from Manchester brewer, Boddingtons. Everyone wondered what would become of Higsons after ... The Cains Brewery. A regional urban brewery with a lot of character, an excellent range of high quality beers (mainly real ale, but also lager) that are superbly branded. Under the ownership of the enterprising Dusanj brothers, owners since 2003, the brewery has a very bright future and is expanding at a rapid rate- in all respects. Cains brews beer from its beautiful, victorian brewery on Stanhope Street in Liverpool. Cains was established by the Irishman, Robert Cain, in the mid nineteenth century. I am asking these questions as I am sitting here at the computer sipping a pint of Cains Raisin Beer. I know it sounds slightly weird as raisins are dried grapes and surely grapes mean wine? When I saw this in Tescos for one pound sixty I just had to buy it even though I was not going to get anymore beer as I already have a few other bottles to sample .Cain?s Raisin beer actually does use Californian raisins in the ... Cains is brewed in Liverpool and only sold in a small number of pubs. It is perhaps this that has led to the brand having an uncertain future (www.savecainsbeer.com). It will be a great radgedy to see an end to this great name. The company is owned by the Danish Brewery Group A/S. The company feels that it is not making enough money in Britain and so want to sell the Cains brewery and the 10 cains pubs. The main brand is Cain Bitter. A fairl dark ale with a great malty taste. It is quite smooth and slides down easily. It is a nice bitter as unlike some it is not too heavy, which alows you to drink more. :-) Cains goes well with traditional pub food, especially ...
