 ... slightly darker than your average bitter, with a very full-bodied, slightly fruity taste. It has a distinct hoppyness, which it derives from its use of the classic Goldings hop variety. I have been a great fan of Cains beers ever since the Robert Cain brewery in Liverpool’s Stanhope Street emerged from the takeover of Liverpool’s own local brewer, Higsons. I had not been a great fan of Higsons it has to be said. In Liverpool I would drink either Peter Walkers Warrington Ales or else Castle Eden, then available in the United Powers pub on Tithebarn Street. Cains became available at the city centre “Cross Keys” pub, just across the road from where I then worked, at Royal Insurance on Old Hall Street. The Cross Keys was (and still is) just around the back of Ralli House. Their Best Bitter was a revelation. ...
