Advantages: Tastes refreshing, good size for packed lunch
Disadvantages: Can get messy
These were recently on offer at the co-op buy one box and get one free. I haven't had these for years since I was a kid so we decided to give them a go again.
Capri-sun are a basically a fruit juice drink. The big difference between them and other drinks is the packaging. A lot of drinks comes in bottles or cartons but capri-sun come in a sort of squishy carton. It is hard to describe it without actually seeing it but it is a silvery colour sort of like a foil package and you can squish it and feel the liquid inside it. There is a picture of the fruit that is inside the drink on the front and the name of the drink. There is also a small hole at the top on the front where you put your straw in. The back of the packet has got all the usual ingredient information and also the straw is fastened in a pastic container to the back. The packaging is definitely bright and is obviously aimed at children. I quite like the squishyness of the packaging although it does slightly concern me that if I put it in my bag it may explode. A plastic bottle seems a lot more sturdy to me.
To drink the capri-sun all you need to do is take the straw off the back of the package. This isn't attached too tightly so it is quite easy to do. Then you get the straw out. It is a bit annoying to have the straw wrapper as you then need to find a bin but at least it is hygenic. Then you need to find the hole on the front and poke the straw through with the pointy bit. This is easy to do but can get a little messy if you are not careful. You really need to make sure with this drink that you don't squeeze the package too much once your straw is in the hole as the drink will come out faster than you expect. This can result in you squirting drink, which isn't exactly what you want.
Once you have managed to get in the drink and hopefully not squirted yourself or anyone else you can drink the capri-sun. I find that I drink these incredibly quickly within a minute or so. I think they were probably designed to be drank quickly as once you have drank a bit there is no lid or anything like that so you can't really put the drink back in your bag.
The taste of the drink is very refreshing and does do the job when yoou are thirsty. One thing I would say is that it does taste very sweet and you can tell that there is a lot of sugar in it. There is in fact 21g of sugar in the 200ml carton, which is quite a lot. If you are on a diet I wouldn't suggets the drink as it is 86 calories for a quick drink that won't last you a minute.
I think the drink would be great for kids lunch boxes and I used to have these in my lunch boxes sometimes. It is quite small so won't take up much room and is probably just the right size for a childs drink. Parents may not be so sure though about the amount of sugar in the drink.

- 25/08/09 I love Capri-sun - I like tha fact that they do a larger screw cap variety in the orange and I think a summer berry flavour too so it's not as messy as the smaller version - well reviewed - Catherine x :) |

- 25/08/09 As you say, perfect for lunch boxes and portability - my daughter loves them, though we tend to opt for the pure juice varieties. Nicely done 8^) |
