Advantages: Taste, Packet
Disadvantages: Price
Having recently tried just about every soft drink I can try I've decided to try the rest of them and seeing this first mean this was the purchased. Capri Suns are a drink I used to drink a seriously high amount of back when I was in secondary school but I've not had in in the years since. Back in the day it used to cost 35p for a 275ml pouch (if memory serves) this went up to 50p with in 2 years, and the feeling they we're charging through the nose at school whilst preaching about a healthy diet seemed rather backwards. Though the prices must have gone up even more as the Squeeze packet I got was almost 90p for 330ml (the same quantity as a coke can), the belief their product is a premium is obvious.
The drink comes in a variety of flavours but this review is about the orange flavour however as it's by far the best one, and apparently the most popular. The drinks packaging claims "Did you know... ...Orange is the most popular juice worldwide", which personally I did not, though I do now. The juice is composed from the juices of Orange, Lemon and Acerola Cherry and boasts having no artificial ingredients, so none of those naughty E numbers we are repeatedly told about but no one seems to know a great deal about. The ingredients for the drink are in fact very simple Water, the previously mentioned fruit juices, sugar and natural flavours (never understood that term, but hey ho, they are natural).
So what does the drink actual taste like?
Well in the case of the orange drink it's obviously orange tasting and really sweet with a slight bitter twist. To me it feels like an Orange version Ribena that's been had perhaps something gone wrong to result in the little bit of bitterness, but it's still a really nice taste. The drink is really smooth and light in the mouth, again like Ribena, the result of this is that the drink is extremely easy to drink. So with a nice texture and a pretty nice taste on the whole, it's a nice drink very likeable but hardly worth the price I was charged from it which just screams of someone not thinking that repeat custom was the way forward.
Now the most interesting things about Capri Sun drinks is actually their packaging which really stands out on the shelf. They come in 2 different forms:
1-The Multi-pack pack: When bought in a box (far cheaper folks) the drink comes in a foil pouch with a straw on the back to piece the pouch and drink away. This results in the drinker needing to either sit it in 1 sitting (like a can) or put it on the table (or desk...) for later on.
2--The single resealable one: When bought as a one off you get this far more expensive version of the pack, again in a foil container, this time the drink has grown a blue screw top and gone from 275 ml to 330ml and grown significantly taller in the process. The drink represents a much more bottle like idea than the other version allow you to to open and close the container at will/
Both containers admittedly look more like the inside of a wine box than a soft drink container and are totally unique in the soft drink industry. Though the question of how much does the packaging cost (especially in the resealable packet) has to be asked, as it seems to mean the drink is out pricing it's self.
Nutritional Information (per 330ml pack):
143 Calories (7%)
34.7g Sugar (39%)
Traces of Fat, Salt and Saturates
The drink is also suitable for vegetarians.
Overall the drink is lovely, it really is delightful to drink but it's far to high priced for the drink to be a regular one. It offers nothing that makes it worth more than a bottle of Ribena (which is a similar price for 500ml) doesn't other than a very original packet which it's self isn't worth the difference in price. Bought in a multi-pack of 10 for around £2.50 is worth it, but buying the single packs cannot in all honest be advised.
Summary: Overly priced drink
