Advantages: A different kind of Rum, with a nice spicey note to it

Disadvantages: Added coloring gave it a noticable taste.

I love Rum, I think it is one of the best things that ever came out of the Caribbean! I like it every way, (except straight) in coke, in a pina colada, with lime and ice, anything tastes good with Rum.

I generally buy Bacardi Rum, as it is the most common one around, but have tasted some expensive aged Rums. However, the other day at a Airport they had a sale on Captain Morgan, and since I am rather partial to swashbuckling pirates, the bottle stood out to me.

I got home and immediately got some coke in the freezer, and hoped to relax after a long trip, with a stiff drink.
But instead of the familiar smooth taste of Rum, I got something quite different, the alcohol had an almost chemical taste to it, (In fairness I have noticed this to some extent in the darker versions of Bacardi as well)
There was a pleasant spicy note but it was ruined for me by the overpowering "chemical" taste.

Originally dark Rum was dark because it was aged longer in heavily charred barrels. But the cheaper versions of Rum out today show on the label that Coloring is added. This is what gives it the funny taste, that real Rum connoisseurs avoid. However Captain Morgan, had the strongest chemical taste I have noticed.

After a while it didn't bother me as much, but if you have tasted more expensive Rum, without added coloring, you notice it instantly.

Summary: I liked the spicy undernote, but the chemical flavorings didnt sit right with me
