Captian Morgan ***********
Captain Morgans rum is named after Captain Morgan, funnily enough. Captain Morgan was a buccaneer who was born in Wales and spent his early years in swashbuckling sea adventures, and rising to fame through his daring pursuits as a privateer. As a representative of the English government, Captain Morgan was empowered to fight the Spaniards on his country's behalf and is still respected as one of Britain's most successful military strategists.
He was promoted to the rank of admiral and in 1672, the adventures of Captain Morgan dwindled after peace was declared between England and Spain. The Admiral's raids continued though, and he was arrested and extradited to London.
Two years later when the peace was broken and the English colony of Jamaica was once again under threat. King Charles II knighted Captain Morgan and instructed him to return to Jamaica as Governor of the island. He worked to transform the island's fortifications and survived various political upheavals while expanding his estate. His interests turned to his sugar plantations and the perfection of a spicy rum. He died a wealthy and revered man, aged 52, in 1688.
How its made **********
Captain Morgans rum is made By taking the central stem of the sugar cane and this is sliced into small pieces. These are then crushed between large rollers, and the juice that is extracted is boiled at a low temperature under vacuum causing the water to evaporate and the sugar to crystallize. The crystals are separated from the liquid leaving a black liquid known as molasses. The molasses is then re-boiled and mixed with water and yeast. It is then allowed to ferment and set to distil in aged oak casks. It is then left to mature for several years.
The Taste ****************
Yummmy is not a word that you normally see in reviews, but that's how it tastes to me, especially when it is mixed with rum coke and ice. I find Captain Morgans rum to be much smoother and not as harsh as other rums can be. I know that there are people out there that drink it neat with just adding ice. I tend to find it far to strong a taste and harsh for my palate drinking rum this way. This is an ideal drink to curl up with on those chilly winter nights in front of the log fire.
You can make a really nice hot toddy from Captain Morgans all you need is a shot or two of rum, add sugar, or honey if you prefer, and then just add hot water. For those long hot summer evenings just add 2 or 3 shots to a tumbler and add loads of crushed ice add coke, and you have a lovely refreshing cool drink. The only problem with this, is that i tend to then drink too much and wake up with a bad headache.
I have always found Captain Morgans to be much better tasting when it is complemented by adding a mixer to it. There is no rules to what soft drink you can add to any alcoholic drink, just add what you fancy.
The only drawback i have found with this rum is that for some reason if i drink it during the summer i tend to sweat a lot, maybe its just me. Whatever rum i drink, including Captain Morgans, if i drink too much of it i tend to get a pounding headache the next morning, which does not happen when i drink other spirits or beer. I have tried many different rums, some good and some ghastly, but i always return to the Captain. This is smooth and refreshing and not too harsh, so it could be drunk by anyone that's over 18.
