I first tried Cardenal Mendoza Solera Gran Reserva on holiday six years ago in Tenerife of all places. In my brief experience of the island there is only one restaurant on that lump of volcanic detritis that could be described as... well, a restaurant. At this oasis in a desert of year-old greasy bacon fry-ups, following the only truly Spanish meal eaten that week, a particularly gracious host presented a receptacle from which the goldfish may have only been recently evicted.
