I'm off on a weeks holiday tomorrow, so the last week has been a case of frantically trying to get organised - delivering guinea pigs and fish to various friends to be looked after, trying to get the fridge empty so I don't end up wasting food, washing, drying and then packing clothes . All this for a week in Sussex .
So, tonight I felt I deserved a break, and decided to get myself some ice cold beer from the local offy. Today, I felt like something fizzy and burp inducing , and opted for Carling, with 8 cans being on offer for £6. I can have some tonight, and have some in the fridge when I get back!
So, I'm sitting at my computer with a lovely cold can on my desk, stylishly decorated in black and white, with the Carling Logo emblazoned across the front, and an image behind the Carling logo that looks a little ike a tribal tatoo style lion . Towards the bottom of the can is a nifty little snowflake I quite like - it tells you to chill the product until the snowflake turns blue .
I think the snowflake is pretty clever, as it means I'm drinking the beer ice cold, rather than going by the outer temperature of the can and getting warmish lager.
Also, rather unusual for an alcoholic drink, it actually tells you on the can how many calories there are . This is brilliant - so many alcoholic drinks don't do this, meaning that (being on a diet) I have to go googling for the information - but this can just tells me right out that there are 165 calories, that each can is 2 units of alcohol, and that the volume is 4%
Poured into a glass, this is a bright clear golden yellow colour, with a lot of fizz. Taking a sniff, I have to say the only aroma I can get is a slightly metallic scent, which may well be because I'm drinking the canned variety, as opposed to bottled or draught .
Taking a swig, it is light and refreshing, with a good amount of fizz to it . In fact, rather a lot of fizz . The can on my desk is my second of the night, and I'm already burping like crazy .It has a slightly sweet malty taste, but again there is that slight metallic flavour to it.
Overall, I do really like this beer . Flavour wise, it doesn't compare to a good real ale - but then no lager does . Its pleasantly fizzy, and it hits that dry spot at the back of my throat like a dream . My one criticism is probably the packaging - it does seem to affect the taste a little, and I seem to remember this lager tasting much nicer on draught .
However, cans are far cheaper, and the metallic hint is only slight in the flavour, certainly not enough to put me off buying this again!
4 stars .
