Many years ago when I was just a novice drinker, a friend introduced me to Carlsberg Special Brew. I had already consumed a number of vodkas before this recommendation was made. I was assured that it was the 'cool' thing to be seen drinking. I think I managed just over half the bottle. Up until then I'd had a great evening but the rest was...well, er...I don't think you want to know. Some friend!

For many years I left this stuff alone. The very thought of it made my insides turn to jelly. Recently I decided to give Special Brew a try again. I really enjoyed it.

The Carlsberg brewery is just outside Copenhagen, in Denmark. Special Brew is a beer which was made to emulate Bavarian beers. It has an alcohol conrent of 9% which doesn't make it the strongest beer available (Carlsberg Masterbrew is 10.5%). Taste wise Special Brew is very heavy with a bittersweet after taste. It is also very rich and I find the taste and texture too strong to drink it with food.

Carlsberg Special Brew has such a distinctive taste and smell that you either love or hate it. There are no in betweens.
