Carlsberg

I have been an on and off drinker of Carlsberg for the past ten years. It's most normally my larger of choice when out at a bar. However, Carlsberg has also increasingly become my carry out drink of choice. Mostly due the price but also it's easy to show up at a party or somewhere with a 12 pack and offer a few out to seem generous and still have enough left yourself.

A bit about Carlsberg

Carlsberg is a Danish brewing company that was founded in 1847. The company is reportedly named after the founder's son who was called Carl. The headquarters for the brewer are in Copenhagen in Denmark. On a recent visit to Denmark I was surprised to see that Carlsberg was not very widely sold in its home country. Seems a bit like Fosters in that way.

In the UK Carlsberg is widely available in both pubs and off licences. Currently Tesco are selling a 12 pack for £8.99, a 24 pack for £14 and 15 packs for £10. I normally buy mine in the can format of 440ml but it's also comes in a smaller bottle which is generally more expensive. Recently my local Tesco sold a 15 pack for £5 if you spent over £30 which was a really good deal.

Carlsberg the main sponsors of Liverpool FC and has its named on their shirts and have been since 1991. It's also a secondary sponsor of the Republic of Ireland international football team.

My opinion

I have been a fan of this lager for the past ten years. It is normally pretty cheap as a carryout drink and I find it to be very easy to drink. Out of can the drink is not overly carbonated and if poured into a glass it would be very hard to keep a head on the beer for any more that a minute or two. The beer should only be served chilled as it looses a lot of its appeal warm.

Taste wise and when served in a good pubs I find it very easy to pick out distinct flavourings of hops, malts, pine and even a hint of sweetness perhaps bananas or apples but that could be just I sign its turning me bananas. However that being said I think this beer strikes and excellent balance between sweetness and bitterness which is perhaps which makes it so easy to drink. I would definitely recommend this lager to any lager or beer drinker.

Summary: Well worth a try.
