Cadbury Highlights Instant Hot Chocolate
by Willow_Warren
I have tried several low calorie chocolate drinks but I always come back to this one. It is easy to make, by adding 3 "heaped" teaspoons (adjust according to mug size) to hot/boiling water and stir. Well you actually have to stir quite a bit; and as you drink to ensure that all the chocolate dissolves and doesn't settle at ... the bottom of the mug. I find the flavour quite chocolaty (which of course is the most important factor), it is also sweet and quite thick - I am generous with the amount of powder added though.
To on to the techie bits, each mug of hot chocolate is supposed to be just 40 calories when made with water in accordance to instructions (I would be surprised if I had a few more calories in my drinks as I'm quite generous with the spoons when using a large mug!). The main ingredients are fat reduced cocoa powder, dried whey, dried skimmed milk, glucose syrup, vegetable oil, milk chocolate (6%). It also contains a number of additives: emulsifiers, thickeners, anticaking agent, flavourings and most importantly sweeteners: Aspartame & Acesulfame K - the latter of which has had some bad press in the past. It is also suitable for vegetarians and the cocoa and sugar has been "purchased in compliance with international Fairtrade standards"
In my experience Highlights Milk Chocolate is widely available in supermarkets in both a 220g and twin packs or boxes of individual sachets. The jars retails these days at just shy of £4 a jar (which isn't cheap) but can be found on occasion on special offer. It is also quite widely available in £1 shops, although the jar is smaller at around 120g but clearly is quite a saving if you have access to one of these shops and can stock up. I have to say I have never worked out how many mugs of hot chocolate I get from one jar to work out the cost per mug!
Highlights Milk Chocolate does not have the creaminess or indulgent chocolate taste of a premium coffee shop or home made version but then I don't think this can be expected of something that is only 40 calories and needs just water adding. Overall though I like this for the flavour, ease of making and the fact that I can drink it relatively guilt free. Read the complete review |

Options Hot Chocolate Mini Sachets
by purplekimmy
I am a chocolate freak and love a nice hot chocolate in the evening. Due to loving chocolate as much as I do, I have of late put on a bit of weight and have started a calorie controlled diet. These Option sachets are perfect for this. I dont have to measure out the correct amount of powder, just open, tip into a cup and add boiling ... water.
I have tried numerous flavours, the white chocolate I was most horrified with, I dont know if I had a bad batch or not but it wouldnt mix with the hot water properly, tasted chalky and horrid. Needless to say I didnt finish it and will not buy it again.
The mint and chocolate varieties are definatly my favorite, the belgian chocolate although nice has been overtaken by my love of the previously mentioned other flavours.
The mint is not overpowering at all, it is a pleasant flavour that doesnt overbear the taste f chocolate.
The orange is refreshing and very orangey, but again not too overpowering. It is like drinking a melted chocolate orange, delishous!
I would recommend these also because they range from 38-40 calories per sachet, which is a stark difference from Cadburys hot chocolate and at 27p each you cant complain. Sainsburys were doing an offer of 7 for £.150 and I stocked up during that :) Read the complete review |

Nestlé Aero Chocolate Drink
by Kate34
Aero hot chocolate has always held a very speicial place in my heart. It would warm me up with its bubbles on cold days. It was my all time favourite childhood hot chocolate. In fact it still is my favourite hot chocolate.
Let's start of by staying I never and I repeat never get a cup of boiling water and put powder in. Oh no. ... I'm picky and for my tastes I need good old heart warming milk. I don't think it would taste the same with hot water.
I know the instructions state just add water and instantly have hot chocolate but I always use milk. You can you hot water if you want even though the instructions say to use milk.
Another thing is also found it pretty lumpy and really hard to mix the powder around fully. Now that I think about it, it could be due to the fact that I never followed the instructions and put the hot water in.
The whole beauty of aero hot chocolate is the bubble, the lovely bubbles. Aero hot chocolate has a lot of bubbles.
It may not be as cheap as the tesco home brand. By buying the stores home brand hot chocolate you may save a euro or so but I prefer to get this and indulge on this bubbly hot chocolate.
Buy this you won't regret it! Read the complete review |
