Ciders in general

Description: Cider (or cyder) is an alcoholic beverage made primarily from the juices of specially grown varieties of apples and ... more
Ciders in general ... pears. In most places in the world, the term refers to fermented apple juice and pear juice, but the drink is known as hard cider or ciderjack in the United States and parts of Canada, where the term "cider" almost exclusively refers to non-alcoholic apple cider. Cider is very popular in the United Kingdom, especially in South West England, in comparison to other countries. The UK has the highest per capita consumption as well as the largest cider producing companies in the world including H. P. Bulmer, the largest. The drink is also popular and traditional in Brittany and Normandy (France), in Ireland and northern Spain.

... called REAL cider? A: Because absolutely nothing extra is added to the juices. No sweeteners, sugars, cultured yeasts, enzymes, artificial colourings or concentrates. Nor is it filtered or pasteurised. Even so, there are two official categories of real cider. Category 'A,' is as described above and category 'B;' which is essentially the same as 'A'except that it may contain some concentrate as well as freshly pressed cider apple juice. Q: So, if there are real ciders, are there false ciders? A: No; not false, as su...more

Premium Review Ciders in general: More Weston's Wonders (1437 words)

Theediscerning filled in the other loose cider category ~ other ciders ~ recently, with an op on Weston's Cider with Lemongrass, and, much to his surprise, got a crown for it. For that he thanks all those nominators, and would like to let them know that he went and celebrated in the inimitable way ~ by going and spending the virtual £1.50 on another bottle of Weston's cider. Said bottle forms what at the moment will be just the first half of this op, but this may change. Many of us here on dooyoo have this sort of rolling op, where every so often a change needs to be made, and an update has to be performed. Thus is the case with this ...  Read the complete review

No doubt many of you will understand what I mean when I say; once a child has asked a question, the answer you supply will generate even more questions, in rapid succession - something like : "Mummy, why is daddy's chin prickly?" "Because he hasn't shaved this morning and his whiskers have grown." "Will I grow whiskers like daddy?" "No, poppet." "Why?" "Only men grow whiskers, not ladies and little girls." "Why?" Because daddy is a man and has hormones to make his whiskers grow." "What's hawmomes?" "Hormones are..er..umm..tsch.Oh ...  Read the complete review

You may have noticed that I'm not exactly the most prolific opinion writer on here. I would love to write more frequently, but find it very hard to find the inspiration and lose the self-consciousness enough to put my thoughts into words. Today, for instance, I woke up determined not to let another week go by before I inflicted more of my obsessions on you lovely people. In the morning, I sat around in my pyjamas, musing gently on what I wanted to review. In the afternoon, I browsed through categories and read a few ops, getting that familiar sinking feeling that maybe I was just going to have to put it off till another day. Evening approached and found me pacing up ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Drink up thee cider - reports from a hazy landscape (616 words)

I am somewhat of an outsider in the cider drinking community. Cider drinkers traditionally seem to be either old men who drink scary concoctions known as "natch" that taste like wood and are more likely to have bits of rat in them then apples. Then at the other end of the scrumpy spectrum is the group of 12-14 year olds who sit in the local park, drinking white lightening from bottles until they're sick. I'm 18 years old - I dont fit into the first group as I'm still drinking "kids stuff" like Blackthorn (and I intend to carry on that way as I value my braincells), and I certainly dont fit in with the child drinker as I drink it ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Ciders in general: Ever heard of 'Dwile Flunking?' (361 words)

There are loads of different ciders on the market all packaged in neat bottles and brightly coloured cans, but none of them can match the true Somerset cider from the old fashioned pump. My mouth is watering just writing this op and I am also smiling with all the memories flooding back…… I am talking fifteen years ago now, A pub in the village of Illchester near Yeovil Somerset, you could get a pint of Scrumpy that tasted out of this world. Two pints of this brew and you were flat on your back if new to the tipple, but the old local farmers could knock back eight pints or more a night and still ride their bikes home. I had the ...  Read the complete review
