Ciucas - Cheap and cheerful (Ciucas)

Advantages: Tasty and refreshing, very cheap

When I first went to Romania, I made a point of testing all the beers and rather liked Ciuc Premium but I got mixed up with the name and later ended up buying a bottle or two of Ciucas. You can see that with names so similar, a mistake was inevitable.. particularly after testing out all that beer! A 0.5l bottle of Ciucas was at the time 9,000 lei which was about 17p and was considerably cheaper than water.

Due to a little inflation in prices and the currency going from strength to strength, plus the loss of some 0's, it is now about 1.1 lei/1.2 lei - which is about 25p, this beer is one of the cheapest I've come across in the country and was at the time - so I didn't expect a great deal from it.

I was therefore pleasantly surprised when I found the beer exceptionallly tasty and drinkeable. It is a bit on the light weight side (4.5%) but retains a reasonably strong hoppy taste to it. A local Brasov beer, I can only think that the beer is made from mountain water because like Polish Harnas, it has a great fresh taste to it that zaps and refreshes you! A good cheap alternative to Romania's fine beers Ursus and Silva!
