Most of us know that drinking coffee is not healthy. But how much do we really know?

Risk of Heart Attacks with coffee
-----------------------------------------
Coffee restricts the blood vessels in the heart and therefore restricts circulation. Caffeine also causes a rise in blood fats and adrenal activity. These in turn may cause your heart to act irregularly and therefore increase the chances of your suffering a heart attack.

A survey conducted in the USA states that those who drink 1-5 cups of coffee daily have a 60% higher chance of having heart problems, than those you don’t. Those that drink over 6 cups a day have a 120% higher chance.
This is incredibly high. I was amazed by these statistics. I never thought that the figures would be like this.

Birth Defects
------------------
Reports indicate that caffeine can cause mutations in animals.
Also from a study done, 13 out of 14 women who drank more than 7 cups of coffee a day had complicated pregnancies.

Others Health Problems
-----------------------------
Excessive coffee drinking (caffeine intake) can cause nervousness, irritability, agitation, headache, rapid breathing, twitching, insomnia, and even ringing in the ears and flashes of light.
In younger children the dangers are worse. It may affect the development of the brain and the nervous system.

So now what is the solution you might ask?

What about decaffeinated coffee?
In 1975, a chemical called trichlorethylene was used to remove the caffeine from coffee. It was then claimed that this chemical caused a "frighteningly high" incidence of cancer in test animals. The manufacturers then switched to another chemical called methylene chloride. Although methylene chloride is safer, it also introduces the same carbon to chlorine bond into the body that is characteristic of many toxic insecticides.
Therefore forget the “de-caf”. Your not
doing yourselves any favours. It’s more like spraying your mouth full of insect spray.

Surely there must be some benefits to drinking coffee?
Of the eight nutritional elements required for nutritional labeling, only niacin is high enough to list as being more than 1/50th (2%) of the recommended daily adult requirement, for four cups of coffee. But coffee actually is worse than worthless in one important respect. According to a study in Vitamin and Nutritional Research, it was found that a component in coffee (chlorogenic acid) actually destroyed much of the body's thiamine after two cups of coffee was consumed in three hours.

For us die hard coffee drinkers there is no substitute. The only way forward is to break the “coffee habit”.

The most important thing is to be fully convinced that it is desirable and beneficial to stop. Tell yourself that you can quit and that you want to quit. Eliminate temptation by not having coffee in the house. If you absolutely have to have some for the sake of company, buy only what you need and give the excess away immediately.

Work on those "coffee times" by replacing coffee with a healthful substitute. (Orange juice, milk). If you normally drink coffee while reading the morning paper, whilst smoking or after meals, then concentrate on getting by these difficult times without coffee.

I personally drink over 7 cups of coffee a day and after finding out about all the negative effects of coffee drinking, will definitely try my best to stop. If I will succeed is another thing. At least knowing about the dangers of coffee is a start.
