Advantages: enjoyable, rejuvenating
Disadvantages: expensive, uncertain health risk
As with virtually all life on this planet, mankind has evolved with a great dependence on water. However, society in the wealthier sections of the world seems to have developed a reluctance over the years to drink water in it’s original state. Instead we tend to intake water in a variety of flavoured formats such as orange juice, beer or tea. Coffee has become one of the more popular ways to flavour our intake, a factor that is reflected by the current cost of the product in general. Much has been discussed over the years concerning the effects of coffee on the human body, although the majority constitutes little more than scientific conjecture. Caffeine is known to stimulate and suppress the desire to sleep, yet we are constantly warned about the various downsides of it. It is even marketed quite abundantly now in a caffeine free form, which seems quite pointless to me. If you do not wish to intake caffeine then do not drink coffee. Do we market orange juice without vitamin C or yeast free bread, what would be the point? As for the taste of coffee, I personally find it to be excellent. Despite the current inflated price I still consider coffee to be good value and cannot conceive of ever running out of it. I not only drink it in great quantity at home, but rarely go out shopping or travelling without calling at a café or coffee stall. Whether or not it does me any harm to consume so much is still debatable, but I shall certainly continue to do so. One thing seems quite certain to me, coffee is very addictive.

- 28/10/02 I was going to say what Emma1973 said, but if you'd said alcohol free beer, then I think I would have gone along with you.
Caffeine is removed from coffee (and coke and tea and whathaveyou) because it is a stimulant, and is not suitable for everyone to take. Vitamin C, is part of your diet, hence it's not removed. Incidently, you can overdose on Vit C - but you have to take a hell of a lot of it! hehehe...turns you orange!
I like coffee though, but not that 'instant' muck! :oD |

- 27/10/02 The main problem with caffeine is that it leaches calcium from your bones - but if you make sure to replace this, then by all means indulge in coffee. :) |
