I don’t buy fruit juice very often, preferring that my family drink water. However when I do buy fruit juice I like to buy pure juice and avoid those made from concentrate. One of my favourite fruit juices is Copella apple juice.

The Copella Company was founded by the Peake family who produced the first bottle of Copella in 1969. In1994 the first chilled litre bottle of fruit juice was launched. In 1996 Devora Peake was awarded the M.B.E in recognition for her contribution to fruit growing and juice making. The name Copella comes from coxes orange pippin and the second half of Devora’s daughters name, Carmella, clever eh?

The Copella web site at www.copellafruitjuices.co.uk makes everything down on their farm in Suffolk look idyllic. But in 1998 Copella was bought by Tropicana, owned by PepsiCo the American global giant who produced such horrors as Pepsi cola!

Before I tell you why I like Copella let me explain the difference between juices made from concentrate and Copella. Juice made from concentrate is produced by squeezing the natural water from the fruit in its country of origin. The concentrated fruit is then shipped the country where it is to be sold. The concentrate is reconstituted by adding back the amount of water that was removed.

Copella apple juice is made from hand picked apples that are hand checked for quality. The fruit is then pressed and bottled on the Copella farm in Suffolk. I did recently read that not all the apples used in Copella juices are sourced from the U.K. I did email Copella to ask them if this were the case but am still waiting for a reply! I wonder if this is true whether Copella will rename their juice to Golden wonder for example! However even if that is the case I still think Copella juice is a superior product to a fruit juice made from concentrate.

The product
***********
Apart from the fact it’s not made from concentrate Copella simply contains 100 % fruit juice, there is no added sugar, sweeteners or any preservatives or colourings. Each bottle of Copella apple juice contains a minimum of 8 apples and a 100ml serving will give you 50% of your daily requirement of vitamin c.

I don’t like clear apple juice as it reminds me of urine! Copella apple juice is cloudy and looks far more appetising. It comes in a clear plastic bottle that can be recycled.

The most important thing is of course the taste of the juice. Copella apple juice has a wonderful smell of freshly picked apples. It tastes sweet but not overly so and does have a tangy kick. It isn’t to acidic, something I have found with other fruit juices. The juice is fairly thick but feels smooth in your mouth. The taste can best be described as like drinking a fresh apple. You do need to shake the bottle well before pouring to avoid getting sediment from the apples. Overall a very pleasant experience.

Once opened this juice has to be used within 4 days. This is no problem in our house!

Copella fruit juices come in a variety of flavours including apple and mango, apple and raspberry, apple and pear, apple and elderflower and apple and blackcurrant. The juice is not cheap and a 1-litre bottle will cost about £1.85. Copella is available in several size bottles from the large 1.75 litre bottle to a handy pic- nic size 250 ml bottle. Copella fruit juice is widely available and can be found in the chiller cabinet of most supermarkets.

Summary: pure apple juice
