Advantages: tastes authentic
Disadvantages: more expensive than other juices
I'm always on a quest to find things that are slightly better for me than all the processed rubbish I seem to feed myself. I also find it difficult to get my five a day.
I first started drinking Copella Apple juice when I spied it on offer in my local supermarket. It normally retails for £1.49 for a one litre bottle, but I managed to get it for half price a few times before the offer ran out.
Packaged in a clear plastic (recyclable) bottle, you can see what you're going to be drinking before you open the bottle I like this feature when buying a product as sometimes the colour of juices can put me off when I pour them out.
This particular apple juice looks like apple juice, almost similar to when you may juice them yourselves at home. It takes on the murky, cloudy appearance, yet a very light colour so it's not off-putting like some cartooned apple juices that look like cider or worse, urine.
The texture appears quite thick in consistency but in fact it's a very smooth liquid with just the slightest bit of sediment that sits on the top of the liquid in the glass.
There is a strong aroma of apples upon opening the bottle. I like this as I know that I will be drinking apples and not perhaps 10% of real apple and 90% of other bits and bobs. The label does state ingredients are purely apples and vitamin C, without any preservatives, colours or sweeteners.
Being a fresh product and found in the chiller cabinet of the supermarket, there will obviously be a use by date on these. Mine contains one a month from today, so not too much of a rush to finish, however it does recommend you use within four days of opening. This wont be a problem if you like apple juice as one litre doesn't last too long, especially when it's providing you with some goodness at the same time.
The taste always kicks my taste buds off to a good start when I take my first sip. It has a slightly tangy sensation to it, along with a fair amount of sweetness. Apples are full of sweet flavours anyway, and it really does taste like you're drinking an apple. Sometimes I find this better than munching one as it takes less time and I'm still getting the same amount of goodness.
The liquid as I mentioned being smooth, really does slide down my throat. There is no nasty aftertaste, however I do notice sometimes if the bottle hasn't been shook before use, or the glass doesn't get drunk for ages, then there will be an element of sediment on the last gulp. It's quite a grainy taste if you are unfortunate to drink this, and I would really recommend swilling the glass before use if this happens.
As with all packaging these days, the label boasts that a minimum of eight apples goes into a one litre carton, and that you only have to drink 150mls to get one of your five a day. 100mls also provides you with 50% of your recommended daily allowance of Vitamin C.
Copella also comes in a variety of other flavours, none of which I have tried, but include apple and elderflower, apple and mango, apple and raspberry, and apple and blackberry.
All of the above are made at a farm in Suffolk, more of which can be found on their website at copellafruitjuices.co.uk if you're interested.
I would definitely prefer to buy this instead of buying a bag of apples and juicing them myself at home, as it almost works out at the same value by the time you have bought the ingredients, and there is a lot less mess to clear up at the end.
