Advantages: cheap, fresh and crisp

Disadvantages: very light bodied, and not for everyone

Country manor boxed wine.

So, take you mind off the delightful weather that we have been experiencing in Britain for what seems like the past decade. Close your eyes, and take yourself away off to that little place you go when you seek a bit of self indulgence. You hear wind blowing in the trees. Perhaps the waves hitting gently off the shore. Birds tweet merrily in the background, and you find solace in your thoughts. You are relaxed. But - what could help you relax even further? How about a nice glass of wine?

I was walking through my local Tesco store, I found myself ambling towards the alcohol section (as I so often seem to.), and perused the wines on offer. Now, I like a glass or two, but as with so many things these days, it is becoming more and more expensive. Credit crunch is a term we all now know and love (Thank you Mr Brown.), and it is slowly taking all the enjoyment out of life. So - I was shocked to see that there was a box of wine on the shelf, and the price was a mere £3.93!!!

Now, I know what you are thinking. It must taste like malt vinegar!!! I confess that I thought that too, but at that price for 3 litres (4 bottles of wine.), I decided to take a chance. So I took it, and walked off, mentally sticking one finger up at today's tax crazy government.

I got home, and thought that I would try it out straight away. There was a little perforated bit on the side, which you break to reveal a tap, through which you pour the wine. It was very easy to do, and it was no time at all before I was pouring my first glass. It was quite light in colour. Perhaps about the same colour as a nice Semmilon chardonnay. The nose was fresh, and clean. There was no real overpowering smell, and at best I would say it was crisp and held a slight aroma of fruits such as the pear. On tasting the wine, the first impression was one of pleasant surprise. It certainly was not anything like the vinegar taste that I suspected. In fact it was quite the opposite. Light and fruity, more like a fruit drink than a wine.

Don't get me wrong, it is no world beater. It is what it is. A nice fresh drink, that wont cost the earth. Not one to give to friends, as if they know anything about wine, they will slaughter you, but more one to bring out when everyone is nicely tipsy. That way they would never know the difference!!

It is not strong at all. It only weighs in at a mere 7.5%, so it can be enjoyed equally on its own, or with food. I would suggest that it is eaten with a light meal such as a salad, or a light fish like sole. It would compliment it quite well, not overpowering the food as sometimes happens with even the lightest soave.

Overall, I would say that it is well worth trying, and keeping in your cupboards for unexpected guests. For the price, you can do a lot worse. And after it is opened you have six weeks to drink it (that's a laugh, it has never lasted more than three days in my house!). So, next time you are out doing the shopping, pick up one of these up, and show Gordon brown that there are still bargains to be had in his current crippling regime.

Recommeneded. G

Summary: A nice cheap, funky wine that wont break the bank.

I have joint problems and find the little squeeze-y tap a bit hard to work. I know there is wine left in the box, but the wine will not come. *cries*
