Advantages: Nice taste, lasts longer, tastes fresher.
Disadvantages: A little more expensive.
I used to be of the opinion that all milk is the same but since recently trying Cravendale I have completely changed my mind!
I'm not a big fan of milk normally, barely eat cereal, never drink it alone and don't drink much tea or coffee so my calcium intake is very low. I try and do what I can to increase this by drinking the odd glass of milk. However, since my fiancé has started by Cravendale I have been having a bowl of cereal every day (with lots of milk) and even finishing off the odd glass more often.
Cravendale appears the same as other milk with it's plastic regulation carton and it looks the same inside, if a slight bit creamier. It smells the same too so I wondered what all the fuss was about, until I tasted it! The milk does seem to be a little tastier and it doesn't have such a sour taste to it. Generally I don't like milk because after just a few days I find that it's beginning to turn and has a slightly funny smell to it. This was not the case with Cravendale and I found that the 2 litre bottle we purchased lasted for around 8 or 9 days without getting any funny smell or taste to it.
I believe the reason for it lasting longer is because it is filtered better which helps to remove more of the bacteria, which in turn stops it from turning bad so fast. I did find this lasted significantly longer and overall I was extremely pleased with the taste and smell.
I did not think that this would make much of a difference to my breakfast habits but in the last few weeks I have actually been eating breakfast cereals, with milk, every single day of the week! It's made a vast improvement to how I feel during the day and it makes me feel psychologically better knowing that I've been increasing my calcium intake!
Cravendale is available in the usual varieties of milk: red - skimmed, green - semi skimmed and blue - whole. The price may be slightly more than some supermarket brands of milk but I am definitely going to purchase this again in the future as it's much longer lasting and has helped me cut down on wastage of milk completely.
A 2 litre bottle of Cravendale retails at around £1.65 but it's not unusual to see the big four supermarkets offering 2 x 2 litres for £2.50 or £3.00 so I would just buy them and then freeze one to save myself a few pennies.
This milk is free from additives and preservatives which is always handy to know and has a 'pure & fresh 7 day guarantee providing it's in date' which I can vouch for!
Whole milk per 100ml:
64 calories & 3.6g fat
Semi-Skimmed milk per 100ml:
49 calories and 1.7g fat
Skimmed milk per 100ml:
34 calories and 0.1g fat
Like normal milk this should be stored upright in the fridge. I did lie it down on one occasion, convinced that the lid was on tight, only to find a puddle of wasted milk in the bottom of the fridge and all over all of the shelves.
This milk is absolutely delicious and fresh, for this reason I am going to rate it 5/5. It's a little more expensive than the normal milk available but it's definitely worth it as I have to buy milk less often and it lasts far longer.
Summary: A delicious carton of milk that's helping me increase my calcium intake.
