Advantages: strong gonger flavour, refreshing, can be mixed with alcohol
Disadvantages: nothing
I do really enjoy fizzy drinks but I do try and keep my intake of them down to a minimum as they are not very healthy. If I do indulge in a fizzy drink then I try and opt for a sugar free option and have recently discovered the light version of Old Jamaica Ginger Beer.
I have always loved the taste of ginger and was introduced to ginger beer by my gran as a child. The old Jamaica ginger beer has been around for quite some time and can be purchased from most larger supermarkets. My recent purchases have been of 330ml individual cans of the light version ginger beer from Asda for just £0.35 each which I think is great value.
The light ginger beer comes in a sliver aluminum can with ring pull opening allowing you to pour the drink out into a glass or drink straight from the can. It states on the can that this light ginger beer has the 'same fiery taste, no sugar' and is made with Jamaican root ginger. You can also purchase this ginger beer in individual or larger sharing bottles.
The ginger beer itself is a kind of cloudy, milky colour a little like traditional lemonade. You can smell the ginger fragrance as soon as you open the can which I personally find very pleasant. The drink has a nice fizz with plenty of bubbles and as soon as it hits your taste buds you can taste the ginger. The flavour is quite strong and punchy and you can a lovely warming feeling from the spiciness of the ginger as you drink it. I personally think this light version of the ginger beer is better as you can a better taste of the ginger rather than it being overly sweet. I do find this a refreshing drink in the summer if served ice cold from the fridge in a glass with ice. It also makes an excellent mixer for alcoholic drinks , especially my favorite Sailor Jerry!
Overall this is one of the best ginger beers I have tried and at less than 5 calories per can it won't ruin the diet either!
Summary: a great tasting ginger beer
