“ You can eat this smoothie straight out of the freezer or let it thaw to enjoy a cold, creamy drink that is a source of calcium. „
I'm always on the lookout for new ice cream or ice lollies that are flavoursome but don't contain ingredients I can't have like chocolate. If I can find ones that are also reasonably healthy then I'm generally pretty over the moon.
The first time I bought these it was just on a whim really. There they were in the freezer compartment in Tesco along side the raspberry flavour and the mango flavour which I so adore and I thought ahh sod it, stick em in the trolley and promptly did so. When I got them home I threw them in the freezer along with a variety of other bits and pieces and sort of forgot about them for a few days.
I'll be honest, I'm not a big banana fan. It sounds odd I know, but I love the smell, and don't mind them dried, or frozen, but I do not like the texture of actual bananas so I'm always a tad wary about anything like this which contains bananas. Will I enjoy it and get the flavour alone, or will the texture and cloying stickiness of the banana come through and leave me wanting to spit the mouthful straight back out again.
In this case, I found myself rather happy with my purchase. These are a delightful mixture of strawberry and banana flavour without having any banana texture to worry about. The texture of these is smooth and simple - similar in fact to the old milk lollies I remember being given as a child. The flavour however, is beautifully intense and the combination of wonderfully strong strawberry with subtle banana combines in a creamy way that is refreshing and delicious indeed.
If you're worrying about the ingredients that you might find in this, you'll be pleased to know that like the other varieties of Del Monte smoothie lolly available, they contain very little in the way of nasties and even got as far as to contain a fairly large proportion of fruit so could be considered as far better for you than many ice lollies or ice creams that are on the market.
Sadly these have to be classed as a treat for us due to their price. They come in around £2-3 for a pack of 3 lollies which is fairly high for a supermarket buy. Having said that, it still works out to less than one might pay on visiting an ice cream van, so I guess that it's not too bad really.
Overall I'd certainly recommend these if you fancy a sweet treat in the summer without eating too many calories, although I have to say, I've not seen them around recently so I'm wondering if Del Monte have taken them away again. I do hope not.
I brought a box of these in Cool Trader because they was only 75p for a pack of 3 big smoothie ice lollies. They are strawberry and banana flavour and because those are my 2 fave ice cream and smoothie flavours I knew I'd enjoy them.
They are about the size of Magnum ice creams but are just a frozen smoothie with no chocolate or actual ice cream on them They are quite hard when they come out of the freezer so you're better off to leave them for a couple of minutes to soften up a bit.
The flavour is gorgeous, it's dead fruity and you can taste the strawberry and banana proper good. I was a bit stressed that the banana was going to take over the strawberry because it usually does in things like this but that doesn't happen and they both blend in lovely together.
I think this is a majorly refreshing ice lollie. Some of that is because of how creamy and delish it is, but also the flavours make it taste so fruity that it feels loads more refreshing than having an ice cream because even though they're nice and cold in the summer I don't think ice cream is all that refreshing.
Another thing you can do with these lollies is take them out of the fridge and let them thaw out into a glass. Then you'll have a proper smoothie to drink instead of eating it off a stick, I haven't done that myself but going by the flavours of the smoothie when it's frozen I reckon it would be gorgeous to drink just after it had unthawed while it was still icy cold.
I've seen these in the supermarket and remember thinking how dear they are when they are at their full price. I can't remember the exact price but I know 75p for these 3 lollies is a bargain and I'm going to pop back to Cool Trader tomorrow and get some more because they're delish AND count as 1 of your 5 a day!
Del Monte Strawberry and Banana Smoothie Lolly!
These are probably the nicest smoothies I have ever had. The reason why they can be called lollies or smoothies is because you can eat them when they come straight out of the freezer or you can drink them when they have thawed out as a normal cool refreshing smoothie. The reason why I bought these was because it was after school and I was very hot, sticky and sweaty in England's horrible weather and I needed something to refresh me down that was not too unhealthy so these were a great pick!
These are Strawberry and Banana Flavoured smoothie lollies. These are actually made with real fruit which is even better. They come in packs of 3 in a cardboard box but each lolly has a plastic wrapping around it! They look very smooth and soft and believe me- they are!
I love the way these taste. They are quite sweet but they tasty very fruity and refreshing. I can actually bite into these because of their soft texture which is brilliant and I do definitely like them better like that! Not only is this healthy, but it also has a very good source of calcium too! There are other flavours available, Mango and more.
The things that I liked about these lollies/smoothies were that they instantly cooled you down but they were not too sugary or too cold on your teeth! They were sweet but fruity too! You can buy these from all supermarkets and they are actually on offer for £1.00 in Tesco at the moment so it is probably the right time to grab yourself a bargain!
The only bad thing is that per lolly there is 23g of Carbohydrates which to be quite honest, I would rather avoid!
per 90ml Lolly
On a flying visit to Iceland the other day I saw these smoothie lollies on offer for the really great price of 75p for a 3 pack. This is great value although unfortunately I haven't seen them in Iceland since. Sainsbury's do stock them but they cost £1.99 for the 3 pack which is obviously not such good value.
I like these because they are virtually fat free and with only 82 calories per lolly they really are a summer treat that you can have without worrying about fitting into your bikini afterwards.
Each smoothie is a very good size and if you are familiar with Magnum's then they pretty much match the shape and size of these. That's where the similarity ends though because these don't have a splash of chocolate anywhere and are basically as they are described. A smoothie, frozen on a stick.
Now I am not a fan of smoothies and never buy them from the shops, nor have I brought a smoothie maker that I ever used and therefore I was surprised when I tried these and found them to be extremely refreshing and tasty.
The strawberry and banana version was my favourite as the banana took away the more acidic taste of the strawberries and made it a gentler taste. I am not a huge berry fan either so this was important to me in the ingredients. I also brought the raspberry version of these but it was way to tart for my liking and the banana/strawberry version was far less bitter for my taste buds.
The strawberry is still the primary flavour that comes through but the banana just softens it enough so that your cheeks don't suck in. I can detect the banana as a separate taste but it is weak and far outweighed by the strawberry, but as I said the balance is right. The smoothies are made with real fruit purees and not flavourings so this is another bonus point as the children can have them too - (my son enjoyed one but my daughter turned her nose up!)
The texture of each is smooth and creamy, and when you take a bite it is easy to melt and mould onto your tongue and let it gently melt around your mouth. I have incredibly sensitive teeth and this is the only way I can eat frozen products.
I do really enjoy this lovely creamy lolly and will buy them again but I wish Iceland would bring them back for 75p, rather than paying £1.99 from Sainsbury's.
This above would be my review in total if only one word reviews were aloud, however it would not really truely encompass the greatness of this product.
Del Monte as a manufacturer are well known and trusted across the nation for many fruit involved products. This product is just one flavour of three (availible in my supermarket, if more let me know) and I have to say are amazing. Personally I would rather have a choclate bar than a piece of fruit, but this has replaced the choclate (big statement to make, I know!). Made from real fruit (ie. not from concentrate) one of these bars has the equivalent of 2 portions of fruit & veg.
The truely great thing about this product is that you can have it as an ice-cream, or let it melt in a glass and have it as a smoothie.
Personally i would recommend this product highly as it is a cheapish (in comparison to innocent and tropicana) and extremely delicious.
I love all the flavours and having the confidence in these products I then saw their new juice bar juices in asda last week so bought one of each pineapple, pinapple and mango and orange and pinapple boy were they good at £1.98 for a liter bottle I was taking a risk but had finished the pineapple one before i got home !!!!and knowing that i had over two of my five aday was pleased as my kids are so into that I knew they would drink it aswell ... guess what I was back at Asda the next day to buy more
The Del Monte Strawberry and Banana smoothie is delicious. It wouldn't have occurred to me as a normal combination of fruits, but I saw it on the shelf when I was shopping and I decided to try it out.
~ What's in it? ~
It's 100% fruit, a fact they're very keen to point out on the front of the carton, in big letters. It's made up of 32% strawberry puree and 25% banana puree. The rest of the drink is made up of apple, orange and aronia juice. I have never heard of aronia juice before. It is a very thick drink and I think the fruit juices are absolutely necessary otherwise it would be so thick it's impossible to drink.
With this much fruit, you can have a drink of this and get one of your five a day fruit and veg portions. I really like smoothies for this reason. It makes it so much easier to get five portions if you can have them in drinks as well.
~ How does it taste? ~
Fruity. Having a mix of five fruits means you don't get just one flavour, but a nice blend. You can't really taste the apple or orange (I wouldn't know what aronia tastes like) but it acts like a background to the strawberry and banana. I think the strawberry is slightly more obvious than the banana, but this works well for me because I prefer strawberries.
If you like strawberries and bananas, you'll like this because they're basically all that's in it. If you're not a fruit eater, you'll probably be less fond of this. I do like fruits, so I really love the smoothie.
Because it's completely natural you don't get any of the fake fruit flavourings. There's a specific flavour of 'fake strawberry' which is in a lot of fruit flavoured seets, but doesn't actually taste like strawberries. It's nice to have a fruit drink that has none of that is there. If you go for some of the strawberry milkshake drinks or some flavoured waters, you'll know what flavour I'm talking about.
~ What about the texture? ~
It has a nice smooth (hence the name) texture. You don't get any fruity lumps. It's all one, admittedly very thick, liquid. There are strawberry seeds in there, but since they're tiny they don't spoil the texture.
The fact that it's so thick makes it a bit difficult to get the last bit out of the carton. It's not just a few drops that don't want to come out, but a couple of good mouthfuls. You can get quite a bit more out by holding the carton upside down for ages and shaking slightly to get the dregs out, but it's annoying and much easier just to decide that those last few mouthfuls aren't worth the effort.
~ Packaging ~
This is the part that I don't like about them. They come in tall, rectangular cartons. This isn't the problem, unless you're trying to find space in the fridge door. The problem is getting into them. The opening is a little screwcap, which is nice because you can seal it properly afterwards. However, the first time you open it, turning the cap pushes down on a piece of plastic inside and breaks the seal. Unfortunately, the seal is quite tough, more so than the cardboard around the cap. It's easier to rip the whole thing off the carton than to just break the seal. This is exactly what happened the first time I bought one of these smoothies, which was a problem because I wasn't at home when I opened it and had to drink the whole litre in one evening. I thought I'd just been unlucky and got a duff carton, but that's not the case. You have to be quite careful when opening them to keep the cap attached to the cardboard.
~ Value for money ~
It's more expensive than going for a supermarket own brand smoothie. On the whole, smoothies are quite expensive in terms of the amount of drink you're getting for your money, but that's because of the ingredients. The Del Monte smoothies are cheaper than Innocent smoothies (at my local shop, you can get a 1litre carton of Del Monte for not much more than a small bottle of Innocent).
If you're going to drink smoothies, you're going to be paying more than a bottle of squash, but you could do a lot worse than the Del Monte ones.
~ Overall ~
I really like them, but I'm somewhat of a fruit lover, especially when it comes to strawberries. If you like fruit, give these a try. They taste gorgeous, they're good for you, they're entirely natural.
There are other flavours of smoothie as well. I've tried mango and passionfruit, but didn't like it so much as this one, however the pineapple and mango was delicious. That's probably just because I prefer these flavours of fruit. I'd definitely recommend when you next do your shopping, having a look at the smoothies and seeing which flavours you'd like. You can be sure that they will taste like the fruit they say on the packet.
My only real complaint about them is the packaging. I have not a bad word to say about the smoothie itself. I find them absolutely delicious, and would recommend them to anyone who likes fruit.
