Advantages: No Sugar

Disadvantages: Too Sweet

I don’t actually drink much in the way of fizzy drinks but when I do succumb, I usually go for Diet Coke, so when I seen Diet Coke with Lemon in the cooler at RS McColl’s, I felt obligated to give it a go.

**BACKGROUND INFO**

Made by Coca-Cola and Schweppes, the company responsible for Coca-Cola, the biggest selling brand of fizzy drink sold throughout the world, even here in Scotland, it has overtaken our very own Irn-Bru, what are all the neds and nedette’s thinking of then, abandoning their national drink to converse with the enemy lol???

I suppose Coke and Irn Bru are similar in that they are both very sugary indeed, one 330ml can contains enough sugar to fill one and a half cups- eeek and leaves you with the urgent desire to brush your teeth as it feels as if some kind of fungus is growing on them, oh and they both rot your teeth!

Not being a fan of diet Irn Bru, well it tastes fowl, I myself prefer Diet Coke, it’s actually really refreshing, not as sweet and doesn’t leave that fowl sugary taste in your mouth.

Sometime in the eighties Coca Cola and Schweppes decided to clean up their act and offer the public more choices as people were starting to become very health conscious and pressure was being put on them by government bodies, so they introduced Diet Coke, a great new product that still had the great taste of Coca Cola only not as sweet or sugary, it contained no sugar and less than one calorie per can, the result it took off, then came Cherry Coke, the same regular Coke with the taste of cherry attached, it tastes nasty indeed and never got into it. Then under more pressure they introduced caffeine free Diet Coke, not really a lot of difference in taste from Diet Coke but better for people of a certain religion, for example Mormon’s who cannot take caffeine of any sort because of the addiction aspect and of course ladies during pregnancy who were becoming more aware of the ne
ed to void caffeine. Diet Coke with Lemon being the latest of their range. The need for them to keep one step ahead of their competitors is now greater than ever, such products as Pepsi are rivalling them with their products and taste.

Of course be careful not to drink too much Diet Coke, just because it’s sugar free doesn’t mean it’s good for you as the acidity levels still can have a devastating effect on your teeth.

**THE PACKAGING**

Diet Coke with Lemon comes in a rather old fashioned style plastic coke bottle, slightly more content than a can at 500ml (1/2 litre), the bottle is clear allowing you to see the trademark black drink through and the good thing about it being in a bottle as opposed to a can is that you can just screw the yellow lid back on to keep it from going flat, unlike most people I actually prefer it to be flat, not keen on fizz at all, tends to make me burp more.

The bottle carries a label similar to that of the original Diet Coke except for a rather small picture of a slice of lemon.

**THE PRODUCT**

Be careful when opening due to the amount of fizz and especially be careful not to shake nor drop even though it’s plastic, it will fizz up even more and you will be faced with a small explosion when you finally open that will result in your clothes and hands being covered in sticky liquid.

Normally if I do have Diet Coke when I go out, I do tend to ask for ice and maybe a slice of lemon as I find the acidity of the lemon compliments the drink rather well, so the thought of all this together was enticing to say the least.

When I poured some into a glass (well plastic glass), it does fizz up again and forms a small head which quickly disappears and you do continue to see the drink itself bubbling away and sometimes you can even hear it lol.

Upon tasting this dark liquid, at first I didn’t notice any difference between that and regular Die
t Coke but after swallowing, I was left a very sweet and artificial lemon aftertaste which I have to say I was not keen on at all, I found I could only drink a few mouthfuls of this before it became very sickly tasting leaving a horrible sickly taste in my mouth, of course it went directly in the bin, not for me but as everyone is different, you should decided for yourself, if you like a sweet tasting drink then give it a go but if like me you perhaps like a bland boring old drink such as Diet Coke, then you probably won’t like this much. I’ll stick with my regular Diet Coke with a slice of lemon at least you can chew the lemon when your drink is finished lol.

I’ll not list the ingredients, if interested you only have to glance over the side of the bottle, but let’s just say there are a fair amount of artificial colourings and flavourings and even include some E colourings, although it does contain a source of phenylalanine and has no fat, protein nor carbohydrates, so good news for all those on the Atkins diet.

It cost me 79p from RS McColl’s, the same as regular Diet Coke, so the good news for some is that they don’t charge any extra for the addition of lemon, but then neither does the pub usually!

A good op. Thinking of what this does to the teeth worries me about what it does to my tummy. :-)
